Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

She's not looking for finanacial support though.

Maybe she could do with it, but that's not why she's on the phone.

Liveline shocker - someone rings up who isn't looking for money/financial support and still gets slated.

I grew up with a sister who had autism. All the family, including Dad, pitched in and helped both physically and financially. Where is this woman's family?

Realistically, what could they do for the poor child. Can a psychologist help him - would he be able to relate to a stranger / psychologist. Are there not guidelines for medical professionals when assisting children with Autism

In fairness to her, she sounds like she has done everything she can. She deserves help for her boy, and I'd want to think I'd get help if my son was in that state.

If we can help drunk arseholes in A+E, we should be rolling out the red carpet for her boy.

That wasn't a joke - there are respite carers that could give the mother a break - its hard to continually fight for your rights or the rights for your child. If she's not sleeping, she probably can't even think straight

It came across as a joke because it can take years to arrange respite care. And even when you do get it, you might be lucky to get 2 nights a month.

I am one of those respite carers you speak of so I'm talking from experience here.

Respite isn't simply a handy place for parents to dump their kids everytime they need a rest.

Just when you thought the lady on the trolley next to Dustins victim was a mad link, we now have a bus driver talking about kid self harming whose previous specialist topic was martial arts in Korea.

Maybe the powers that be should be directing our hard earned tax euro towards the people that need it and let the drunks / druggies, who choose to mess their lives up, sink or swim

child would hate to be away from its own surroundings and that in turn would trigger a violent meltdown, the mother would not put her son through that

I really hope in the future you never have a child with autisim, its not easy. I'm very lucky, my daughter would be classed as mild but even with that its a very hard condition to live with, I wouldn't know where to start with a child who is self harming. Your comment is disgusting.

I have some (a little) experience of respite caring

Its normally a gradual thing until everyone is comfortable with it - no child would be just dropped off to get on with it

I'm not slating her and never mentioned money.

My point was about the support group 'Mothers with Autism' or something.

Setting up a group that excludes one parent isn't helpful.

Dads with autistic children need support too. But a lot of women out there assume a monopoly on the pain and suffering while expecting men to grin and bear it.

I don't think an insurance company should be allowed to say they won't cover drugs that are approved by the HSE.

If the drug is approved here, then it should be available to everyone.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,657 ✭✭✭CountyHurler

Is Joe negotiating with the drugs companies on behalf of the HSE now.. The man really has lost the run of himself... I wonder if they rush this drug through to approval stage, and things emerge later (like with Thalidomide), will Joe be putting his hand up to say that he was wrong.

Absolutely. Regulatory failure (again) in Ireland.

If you want to offer health insurance here, you should be told you can only do so if you cover approved drugs.

Am I getting the impression that this drug is only available, if at all, to people with private insurance. If you're a public patient........adios!

Where there is life there is hope and who knows, in that four months they could find a cure - would you take the chance?

    I want to live

Unless you're driving an oul banger, you should re-assess your exit strategy as new cars scrub a lot of CO out of exhaust...

Why can they not just put up some signs forbidding swimming in the area?

Do people have a constitutional right to swim ANYWHERE?

Between the fishing boats, and the dodgy dolphin, they'd be perfectly justified - it's dangerous. End of.

ETA - or else saying you swim entirely at your own risk, and Joe Duffy will NOT take your call if you get injured.
