Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    This is really, really disgraceful radio. Over a quarter an hour of this bilge now. He has got to go, but he's clinging on like a leech.

    I wouldn't blame whichever one of the 3 twins is in Oz for working in the mines for the rest of his life where he will never have to hear the words Joe Duffy again.

    Couldn't the politicians just stand outside the main gate and chat to people as they come and go?

    Only right. These poor people have enough on their plate without our smiley candidates banging on their doors

    By definition, they are only here on a temporary basis. Why should they have a vote. On that basis we should be giving tourists a vote?

    I agree, as residents of a refugee centre / asylum seeker they are not citizens and don't have a vote in these elections. Why has Joe not pointed this out?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,023 ✭✭✭Meathlass

    They have a vote in local elections but not in referendums.

    You don't need to be a citizen to have a vote

    The right to vote is as follows:
    •Irish citizens may vote at every election and referendum;
    •British citizens may vote at Dáil elections, European elections and local elections;
    •Other European Union (EU) citizens may vote at European and local elections*
    •Non-EU citizens may vote at local elections only.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,336 ✭✭✭Hamilcar

    Most of these centres are private facilities. I don't see politicians complaining that they can't canvas in hotels

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,141 ✭✭✭Yakuza

    Oh, well then if they have a vote in the local elections then they should be subjected to the same hounding by politicans desparate for a vote then!

    Asylum seekers are only allowed to remain here as temporary residents while their application is being processed. I fail to see why they should have a vote at all.:confused:

    How can Joe go from Sonny to a serious, well-informed discussion like this!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,886 ✭✭✭✭Roger_007

    Is the situation in Nigeria the hot topic in the local elections?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,723 ✭✭✭An Claidheamh

    I'm not sure I like this whole thing of blaming the Nigerians for being victims of this terrorist group.

    People protesting outside the Nigerian embassy.

    Joe giving out about the Nigerian army, etc.

    I wonder whether Margaret is one of those Nigerians over here who regularly returns back to Nigeria for extended holidays to the place where they are supposed to be have been persecuted? Must have persecution amnesties for a few weeks a year.

    Why are we giving these regimes financial help? The local governments are corrupt and pocket the money and the lawlessness continues

    The only reason anyone is in one of these centres for 5 or 7 years is because they put in endless bogus appeals against their failed applications. Of course Joe never mentions this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,723 ✭✭✭An Claidheamh

    Why haven't those socialists who have been in power for 3 years like Joan Burton and Ruairí Quinn done anything about the conditions of social services and asylum seeker care?

    "Concentration camp".
    Stupid person - hardly a comparison at all, and nothing more than an over-stated kneejoerk reaction. I don't recall TV lounges in concentration camps.

    I'm amazed that people with serious injuries would even contemplate leaving a health carer, especially if they have received a good service. I wouldn't take the chance of it all going belly up

    Does the Insurance Ombudsman cover health insurance?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,570 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

    Would he not have risked getting Ippy in ten years' time on the public system, rather than when he actually needs it (ie now)? That's why people persist with private insurance in our current system.
