Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I'll never understand how a family member.... especially a mother, can treat a daughter with such contempt just to avoid the "shame" of a situation. It truly is disgusting.

Poor woman, so young and having to go through a birth being treated like dirt by everyone. :(

I just read 'Valley of the Squinting Windows' yesterday.

I suggest anyone under 50 should read it to get an understanding of how things
were back in the 'good ole days' of Holy Ireland.

Quite often, it was the 'respectable' business/farming class who delivered their daughters to the Mother and Baby home, as they lived in fear of losing their
    'reputations'.

This was very clearly illustrated in Brinsley McNamara's book.

The Church excuse is a cop out. People are big enough and bold enough to make their own decisions. Plenty of people stuck by their young daughters, those who didn't are cowards and should be ashamed of themselves.

What age are you, as a matter of interest?

The Church 'excuse' is most definitely NOT a cop out!!

Before mass media made us all 'experts' at everything, the church ruled small
individual communities with an iron fist. People lived in fear and dread of eternal
damnation if they did not do the bidding of the church. If a girl 'disgraced' her
family by getting pregnant, it was not unknown for the priest to roar it out from
the altar at Sunday Mass, which EVERYONE attended! The priest could go to the
girl's home and tell her parents that she must leave the village as she would 'contaminate' all the other young women in the area!! :(

I once heard an account of one such visit to the home of a girl who 'fell pregnant'.
Two priests told her father that she would have to go away as she would be a 'bad
example' to the other young women of the locality. The man faced down the two
priests and told them that, as long as there was breath in his body, his daughter
and her baby, would have a roof over their heads in his house. To my mind, that
was one brave man to risk bringing the wrath of the church down on himself.

He would have been an exception in those times. He was also quite poor and did
not belong to what were regarded as 'respectable' classes. Those with a 'reputation'
to maintain -'local business people/farmers - would have been more likely to
comply with the 'directives' from the priests.

Just a break of five minutes to discuss the world cup, Joe... That's all ffs.. I cant think that anybody other than Duffy himself is driving this agenda..
