Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Here is the link for Linguist Terry Dolan on MBB.

Very interesting, fair play to him.

I think he's partly right, but there's a whole other section of the English audience that just laugh at something like MBB. They just laugh because they find it funny, without being too deep about it.
If I may veer the topic slightly - Roddy Doyle was slated for his books full of Dublin characters; slated by middle-class Dubliners who simply couldn't admit he'd got it bob-on in his observations of life in many parts of the city.
Similarly, Rab C. Nesbitt was slated by many middle-class Glaswegians, who just couldn't accept that he encapsulated / caricatured so many bits of life in Glasgow. I knew Rab C. I grew up with Rab C. I used to piss myself laughing at Rab C, because the character of Rab C was an amalgam of many people I knew in real life and it was acutely observed and written.
You still find po-faced tossers who deny that, of course.

Oh absolutely. Just that they still exist I find bizarre.

    What an insufferable snob!! :(

Terry Dolan is expressing his own feelings of superiority - his several references to
the Red and Green Luas lines clearly illustrate this. Keelin Shanley even had to remind
    him not to be 'classist'!!

I used to enjoy listening to him on Sean Moncrieff's Newstalk show many years ago
before he (Dolan) had his stroke. Those slots were confined to describing the
meaning and origin of words in our lexicon. Today, he came across as a quite
    unpleasant person, in my opinion.

Re the Irish and frequent use of bad language, he and Keelin were correct. It really
    annoys me listening to a stand up comedian tell jokes to an unresponsive audience;
he then introduces a few 'f*cks' and the place erupts! :( The opposite applies to US
audiences - if a comedian uses a swear word, there is stunned silence.

I doubt the huge audience who watched MBB in the UK last Christmas Day did so
because they wanted to feel 'superior' to the 'vulgar' Irish!! I would even hazard a
guess that they did so for the simple reason that they enjoyed the humour. No
    analysis needed.

I was wondering if that was him. I used to like that slot too.

I think he was really angling to the historic way, almost to Victorian times, of language and class.

And what thickness of Tarmac do they use on the runway?

Maybe Joe could get Pavee Point on the line and find out. :D

Just looking at pics of Joe at d'premeeer on independent.ie - luckily for you all I can't post them. He's got this thing about silk scarves that age him greatly but I'm sure he saw uncle Gaybo with a scarf once and thinks it's the way to go. He's not wearing a belt and his shoes are horribly mismatched and far too casual for the rest of his ensemble. I'll refrain from even discussing the dickie bow. He is severely lacking in the sartorial elegance department.

Great news is that upon reading the article I discovered (well it was news to me anyway) dat dis fillum is de first of tree, as in we have two more fillums to go before this becomes the whole MBB is consigned to history. Oh dear.....

One final question, why does BO'C insist on wearing his glasses on his forehead and not over his eyes? Are the glasses an addition to give the illusion that he is smarter than he actually is?

Its along way from silk scarves & bow ties joe was raised. If a salt o d earth ballyfermot plumber surviving through life on the average wage turned up in the local on a saturday night dressed like that he,d be laughed out of the place

Ah begrudgery is alive and well I see! Sure isn't Joe just dressing like any accomplished author/broadcaster/journalist/actor/amateur psychologist/detective/doctor/comedian/scare mongering salt a dee irth rabble rouser would dress? ;)

At least he ditched the HORRENDOUS red waistcoat that he breaks out on occasion.

Anyone have any idea what Joe's "fee" for his appearance in D'Movie is, or is he on a percentage? Newstalk estimate the MBB franchise will be worth in excess of €100million (not a typo) when the fillum is factored into "de sums".

I don't agree with this. Terry Dolan's opinion is just that - his own opinion!

I honestly don't know why I find MBB so funny, especially as I detested it the first
time I saw it a few years ago. I now find myself roaring with laughter every time I
watch it, tears literally rolling down my face!!

    An enigma, really!!

Rumour has it Joe asked the cameraman to photoshop out Dr Quirkey's in the background and replace it with the Gresham.. Also, there was an air of excitement and nervous anticipation last night as news broke of Joe's nomination for an Academy Award in the category of "Best Socialist In A Comedy"...

We'll have a show today given over to Louis Copeland giving advice to Joe on how to wear a suit. Were the no mirrors in the shop, it's a pretty bad fit.

That is a bit of a dog's dinner, right enough.
Some people can wear a potato sack and make it look elegant, but Joe has succeeded in doing the opposite.

Joe is disgusted with the air traffic controllers going back to work so he has to go back 4 years to give out about them.
