So after hearing about Michael D. Higgins queuing up for an ATM on Baggot street in the news earlier, I learned that he is now the president of Ireland....since 2011...and I hadn't heard a thing about this!

Now id consider myself fairly well up on general news and whatnot (beyond the obvious above) seeing as I browse AH on a regular basis and visit other websites broadcasting the news but this has left me fairly bewildered.

I know a lot of people couldn't care less about politics and such, but is anyone else as utterly hopeless as I am on the subject? :p

Well if you lived in Galway you would've kinda noticed it. :pac:

I'm the same but i have an excuse as he's not my president.

I had thought Enda Kenny was president

I'm surprised he had to use an ATM. I always thought that heads of state weren't meant to do that sort of thing.

Did you at least know there was a presidential selection? Often something that you go through is just put to the back of your head as you are not interested anymore. You don't see or hear of it much and maybe anytime you heard you just assumed it wasn't about the president but just him himself.

Often something like that happens me with various stories, I think it was the google buying motorola that stumped me for ages, was busy during time and wasn't reading as much news or listening to podcasts. Whole story blew over and it was only months later when Samsung were complaining about something that i read about it.

    I voted for Kang.

Micheal D is President, Enda Kenny is the Taoiseach but after that I don't have a clue. Couldn't tell you the name of the TD in my area at home. I used to be fairly up on politics and what was happening but I just stopped caring at some stage.

In all fairness, you'd want to have been living under a rock for that farcical presidential election campaign to have passed you by. Are you sure you weren't out of the country?

Well then you're certainly incorrect in that consideration! This is about the most basic fact I can think of regarding politics.

    Yep! Haven't a clue, don't care either. Doesn't matter who's in power, they're gonna f**k you over!
