Back again, this time for a mate who wants a rig for video editing (i'm doing a course so hopefully won't need help soon!).

1. What is your budget? €700

2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Video Editing (beginner/intermediate) and general internet, 5.1 surround support (PC Speakers) - no gaming

3. Do you need a copy of Windows? No

4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? No

5. Do you need a monitor? No

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? 26" Monitor (believes it to be full-hd, specs awaited!) and probably won't upgrade.

6. Do you need any of these peripherals? BR-Drive

7. Are you willing to try overclocking? No

8. How can you pay? Credit Card, Paypal.

9. When are you purchasing? Within the month

10. If you need help building it, where are you based? No need.

Be wary of this, 5.1 support on PCs isn't (typically) the same as 5.1 for movies.

So, anyone any recommendations on the above or any changes to it? Would i be better with an i5? GPU a good one?

You could downgrade the processor and upgrade the gpu, from what I've heard GPU rendering is a lot faster than CPU rendering unless you have something like an i7 Extreme

Coolio, i'll look into that. That's why i need the help. I know what each part does, i'm just not the best at putting the best (read: affordable) parts together to make the best rig for the price.

I'm no expert at video editing builds, but I would say it would be a good shout to go down to an FX6300 and upgrade the GPU to a 760. You could also downgrade the PSU to a 650w to save a wee bit more

What program is he using for video editing? But here is a build with a 256GB SSD and a 760. If you state the programs he is using then I could put up a better build. Not sure if a 760 is even needed!

If you're using Premiere, GPU rendering on an unsupported card can be buggy (for me on my GTX560 anyway, to the extent that I had to turn it off when making a 4K documentary).

I'd go for an i7 and pick up a second hand gtx 580 3gb. It's supported by adobe, has a tonne of cuda cores and still won't really by utilized much. It's a pity ram is so expensive, but for video editing you need it, 16gb is what I'd recommend, if you can squeeze it into the budget. You'd have 8gb used up just thinking about opening up premiere, photoshop, and after effects at the same time.

I'd also say get two 128gb ssds, rather than one bigger one. Have your windows and programs on one and use the second as a scratch drive, and to hold media you're currently working with.


But yeah, what programs are being used and we can all try tailor a build to fit it as all the apps like certain things more than others

I believe it will be After Effects and Premiere Pro, as he has access to CS6 Master Collection.

Sorry to drag up this thread, but before posting a similar one, wondering if this build was suitable for video editing or what was chosen in the end?
