I really don't see your issue.

Eclectic is good, are you honestly saying that it's against some kind of charter?

I think you are missing my point. Eclectic is good indeed, and I have mentioned my admiration for Kelly-Ann. My quibble, which is a technical one really, is how much latitude can you be afforded when you are licensed as an Alternative/Indie Rock station.

Sometimes, there are grey areas in genres, there are overlaps, there are crossovers - that's fine. But should a station licensed as above be playing, for example, a straight country pop tune that has no overlap at all with the license definition. But it's not just the odd one - it's numerous insertions of songs which bear no resemblance to the license. One could expand that on to some of the specialist shows, such as "Souled Out" on Mondays, but even I would afford some latitude there. If the spirit of the music being played is alternative/indie oriented I think the license is being fulfilled... you might say yesterday's "alternative" music.

What I am trying to say is (maybe not very well!): how far can the definition of the license be stretched and indeed how often?

It is something I noticed quite a few times on Kelly-Ann's show in particular, but probably on other shows too. I am not having a rant. Rather, I am trying to tease out a few issues by throwing it open for debate. I'm open to persuasion on this so don't misunderstand me!

Kelly-Anne's show has similar free reign to the Richie & Richie show with its music output, and perhaps that's why she deservedly got the slot. The heads of TXFM would surely have had a word with her if the music played was against the station's licensing ethos or whatever.

Also, today someone requested some Jamie T, to which Joe replied "We played Sticks 'n' Stones during the week", and basically a straight-up no. Jamie T has a fantastic new song out, yet they'd rather repeat Feint Praise by Bell X1 instead?

Kelly-Ann Byrne is quite an encyclopedia of music. She also has a very diverse taste in music. Bear in mind that when she first came to Phantom (R.I.P. !), she presented a show that was largely disco-based. She has a very similar show now on Today FM on Saturday nights.

While this is all very admirable and I am personally most impressed with her knowledge of genres and music from all eras, I do wonder sometimes about how far she is stretching the definition of "Alternative Rock", which is what TXFM is licensed for.

Take tonight. Kelly-Ann played "Islands in the Stream" by Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers. No - it wasn't Carol Dooley with Mellow Moments on Sunshine 106.8!! She followed that up with a very pleasant jazzy piece by Dusty Springfield - "Spooky". Country followed by light jazz! By the way, the next song was pure indie: "Moaning Lisa Smiles" by Wolf Alice! Just before the news, Kelly-Ann went back to the '60s with The Zombies and "She's Not There".... a very pleasant piece of psychedelic pop.

At least Kelly-Ann Byrne is fearless and adventurous and eclectic in what she plays, unlike so many daytime presenters... and her show is all about the music.

However, harking back to the disco scene, Kelly-Ann regularly plays tunes from the '70s. Now, while I like Chic very much, that is not the point. Does anything now go in TXFM, admirable and all as some of the musical choices are?

You are right on the money. I do like her show, but there is too much Prince, 70s disco etc on it. I like diversity, but there has to be some parameters, and it is meant to be an alternative station. Just change the raiton slightly in favour of more new alternative rock, and it's the best show on the radio.

Can i dare say it might be an age thing........I grew up listening to Radio Luxemburg, John Peel, and all the punk/disco/ska
reggee etc etc of the 70's/80's...its very hard to please me these days when it comes to music stations, and TXFM doesnt fill me with hope when it comes to an "alternative" station...now i know JP used to play some strange stuff, even country tracks, but they were "obscure" ones like Bill Monroe or Jimmie Rodgers...so maybe she's just playing songs from HER youth...I do like her show though.....just my tuppence worth...

Listening to the Park Life show, keep the sports talk for the sports section of the news no? There's far too much sports talk in between music breaks.

Isn't that the point of the show? I haven't listened to it but afaik, it's supposed to be a replacement for Stadium Rock.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,101 ✭✭✭Max Headroom

No interest in the sports covered on the show, and yes theres far too much talk anyways....i switch over......

No idea, music was ok, if it was a sports show with music thrown in fair enough.

Still didn't care for the sports talk :p

Any opinions on the latest JNLR figures? TXFM certainly aren't crowing about them, but at least the station is up slightly.

Were they expecting a massive increase in listeners with the relaunch.

(My wife now listens to TXFM ahead of Spin because she likes the tunes. And she doesn't even own any Broken Social Scene albums or anything)

IDK much about how these things work but isn't the JNLR a yearly accumulator, so figures incorporate an increase in Phantom Listeners more than the 1.1 "listened yesterday" figure of TXFM? I might have this totally arse-ways so apologies in advance. Also, doesn't a .2 increase only mean that about 5 more people quoted the station when polled? Can anyone help me if this is wrong? Doesn't it really mean that Phantom were improving and we'd have to wait until about a year from now to get true data n TXFM? Like I said, IDK. I just found out about this rating system and looked it up but it's hard to make heads or tails of it from my viewpoint. But maybe that's the reason for the hushed approach on these numbers. Beuller?

    yes, i believe you're right.

the JNLRs come out every quarter. any of the analysis pieces i've seen are dealing with a year-long trend, and quoted that increase, most of which would be during Phantom's existence.

perhaps the detailed breakdown that is provided to subscribers has the quarter-on-quarter trend...

it perplexes me how, other than a slight bounce because of publicity around when Phantom finished/TXFM started, there could be any noticeable increase in listeners, as it's essentially the exact same station as Phantom.

Yes but there is also a 6 month break out as well for listened yesterday and weekly listenership (reach). TXFM launched in APril (I think) which would let them fit nicely into the start of a quarter.

Quart on quarter comparisons are still 12 mths to one date against 12 months to the other date.

It will take a full year before TXFM will have its own data without the taliban.

What is the story with gaps in the broadcasting? I've begun listening again in the last month or so, and I regularly hear dead air of maybe five seconds in the middle of songs. They are hardly dopey enough to be actually closing the fader during the song, are they?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,376 ✭✭✭The_Captain

    Haven't noticed it myself tbh

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,467 ✭✭✭Oasis_Dublin

It happened just there earlier during your man who Radiohead saw and then recorded the bends...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,066 ✭✭✭Firewalkwithme

Yep, the sound is cutting out randomly in the middle of some songs for a few seconds. I thought it might be the radio I was listening to but I have heard it happen several times on three different radios now all in different parts of Dublin. I have emailed them about it twice and got no response back.

Maybe some of you could fire off a few emails too, it might get their atention.

I thought that was just me! Sometimes my streaming connection isn't the best but maybe there's more to it if you're hearing it too.

Maybe Denis O'Brien is practising pulling the plug?

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,317 ✭✭✭✭Birneybau

It's very annoying. Clarke Beck 'played' Aphex Twins new song earlier, copped there was nothing happening after about a minute.

Maybe Denis O'Brien is practising pulling the plug?

This guy has nine lives. More chance of free petrol from Topaz before the plug is pulled.

He will wave the major dirt in front of the government as usual and then allowed change the license agreement.

    Yeah I heard that lol

Not long beforehand she thought she had spoken over the end of Groove is in The Heart and apologised fot it.

Not one of her better days :)

Don't think I've ever listened to Clarke before, when's he on? :pac:

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,317 ✭✭✭✭Birneybau

Clarke is Clare's alter-ego, he is not excited about every single band and gig coming up, bit of a discerning attitude.

He was covering the day Clare made that ad for TXFM, wherein she pretends to be a Spin d.j., when she actually was one before.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,376 ✭✭✭The_Captain

Tbf, she's not the worst former Spin DJ currently presenting a prime time show on TXFM

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,812 ✭✭✭Vojera

The past week or two I've found her music selection a bit fresher too, quite a few tracks I've never heard her play before. Good to see.

Has anyone noticed the amount of times they play Passion Pit - Take A Walk recently? Good song and all, but they do have more songs.
