Can someone explain how the f**k Biff Clyro are so popular? They are absolute ****e. Every time they come on the radio and they have been way too much on TX lately, I feel like I have to turn it off. They are like a bad parody of a stadium rock band but not funny in the way like The Darkness were.

God I hate them so much.

You're not wrong. I often wonder are their fans the type that think they are being really edgy and "liking" Biffy Clyro ironically.

It certainly has absolutely nothing to do with any musical ability. Are they so uncool they're cool?

I was a big fan of Biffy. Used to go see them in the village and the viper rooms back in the day.
Their first couple of albums were a lot heavier and a lot better (check out Justboy or 57).

Then they went the way of Muse and bought into that stadium rock sound. It's fairly crap now.
Once Matt Cardle borrowed their song for x factor, they got a load of teenage fans and changed their sound accordingly.

    I miss old Biffy.

Kings of Leon-esque so. I still won't be checking out their early stuff.

Ah but Paul Donegan really likes them, as we're regularly told, so they'll be played until the death.

I know a lad in Scotland that knows Simon Neil's family. Biffy Clyro were making so little money that his wife was working full time as a teacher to pay the bills, even though the band were pretty famous and touring.

Supposedly they started going for a more mainstream sound purely for financial reasons, based on how successful Kings of Leon were from going mainstream.

I can't blame them to be honest, I've tried to make money as a musician and it's a paint in the ass, for some strange reason I still keep trying.

Glitter and Trauma is an unreal song and Saturday Superhouse is one of my all time favourites. Even Folding Stars and Black Chandalier are great more recent tunes.

Latest album is a bit ****e.

Sorry if this has already been covered on here but when is the end date for TX?

Also do people have any recommendations of any other stations when it is gone? I'm not talking about internet radio really as I have TuneIn App on in the house (although open to suggestions) but mainly for my normal old school radio in the car.

Joe let slip about 3 weeks ago that it's the 22nd of next month.
I really don't know what I'll listen too, probably just RTE 1 and Newstalk for the chats, I can't stand Nova.

Music on Nova is pretty good.

    It's the presenters I can't deal with.

Christ that is depressing. There is be virtually no radio stations playing decent music then outside of Nova.

Might get the odd bit on Today FM with Louise Duffy, Paul McLoone and Kelly-Anne Byrne. John Creedon on Radio 1 in the evenings can play some great stuff too.

Early Biffy stuff is amazing....agree re Glitter and Trauma....one of my favourite songs of theirs. I think they're at their best when they're on the hard stuff....their slower songs don't work for me at all.
Nova - agreed too - some of the music I don't care too much for, but it's the best alternative compared to the other stations on offer - but I cannot stick the false jollity from the presenters. Everything is AMAZING AND AWESOME AND THERE'S JUST TOO MUCH ENTHUSIASM FOR EVERYTHING and it drains the life out of me. Cathal's more low key approach to presenting is my kind of thing. You can tell he's really enjoying himself, but he's not in your face.
Alternative stations - I'd say you will have to look at specialist shows more so than a station per se on the actual radio. Paul McCloone, Tom Dunne, etc. Not much use when you're driving during the day though, I know. Sorry.

    Music on Nova is awful.

Radio na Life 106.4 - good tunes throughout the day. v eclectic, unlikely to hear Nova tunes

Dublin City FM 103.2 - during the morning/evening commutes. Bit crap during the day, special interest shows with no music, random music shows at night.

But you have to put up with Irish.

DCFM's "Live Drive" is clearly traffic presenters playing what they want on the air with the CDs they find in their cars and at home.

More than likely, but it works!

Start recording it from now and play it on a perpetual loop once it's finished. Won't notice much difference playlist wise anyway.

You know that Metronomy song Night Owls that's on rotation these days? The riff in the verse reminds me of something and I can't quite figure it out. Could be KOL or Phoenix but I'm not 100%. Any ideas? It's driving me insane.

Yeah..it reminds me of how bad this modern alt/indie is....seriously i cant even categorise some of it...pop/disco/jazz...its indie like Kylie Minogue was indie..

What's this "Sound of 1991" craic? I can't listen at work so only get to hear about the first 45 minutes of Cathal's show, did he announce yesterday that this was something he was going to do? Is for the whole show or just this hour?

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,936 ✭✭✭LEIN

Just noticing this this morning. Another step in the wind down I suspect.

Over night seems to have become 90's alternative rock.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,058 ✭✭✭Adiaga 2

Ha! 1991 I love it! Must be some kind of Nevermind anniversary thing. Before 7 they did play Seal though.

    Just did a 1991 live guide :D

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,936 ✭✭✭LEIN

    Cathal sounds prerecorded.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,936 ✭✭✭LEIN

    Something strange going on.
Paul just gave the event guide, ticket prices were all in £....

Is Tx available up north too?

It was supposed to be a throwback to what the love guide would've sounded like in 1991. £3 for a Blur ticket and G'n'R playing Slane next summer :pac:

    Ah, that makes sense.

I'm loving this 1991 day thing they are running now. Wouldn't complain if this was a glimpse of its future (Nova?) self either- an alt 90s retro station
