The drive home this afternoon was when it hit me, and hard.

    Every other station was torture.

Nova is a absolute disgrace. Classic rock brief yet content skating very close to 4FM and Q102. I think Joe actually played more classic rock tracks in the same time slot.

My worry (first world problems) is there's no station now to bring new non-chart music to its audience together as a whole. Diving into the Internet is too scattergun an approach. I really felt the cultural vacuum today and truthfully I didn't think I'd notice to the extent that I did.

Off work sick today. Usually I'd have the radio on my bedroom. I couldn't bare to even attempt to flick to another station today so it's been a quiet day.
I think some people think I'm nuts for being so upset about a radio station, but I'm genuinely gutted:(
Dreading getting back in the car next week and hearing static.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,951 ✭✭✭paulbok

For those of us whose cars are not connected to the fcuking internet, what options do we have? I don't even have an aux input that I can find (despite there being an aux button) on my radio. Things were very different in 2002 apparently.[/quot you look in your glove box or storage area by the handbrake for the aux input?

Did you look in the glove box for the input?

I must have went to turn it on about 10 times today :( both in the car and in my apartment, the static in the car really hit home that it's gone

    Don't diss the K-A. ;)

OH i didnt know she was cut , I thought she just ran away !

However she does gig everywhere and is on other stations i think , so if you miss her you can easily get your fix .... the other not so much. :(
why shes at bottom of my list of the ones i will miss.

i don't think that's correct, she said that she chose to stop the show herself, as she had too much other stuff on the go between TodayFM, the heineken sound atlas thing, and DJing in clubs.

oh i take it back again she did run away and leave us so she is back to the meh :):)

today is another emotional rollercoaster , i hate her , i love her , i hate her, i love her haha.

I will forgive her coz she does play the good tunes however I will not forget her abandoning us in our months of need :)

I can't believe that the transmitter was switched off that fast. I honestly couldn't believe that it just dropped like that. Even the temps never turned off that quick.

Ironically, Phantom (when temping), had their transmitters on longer before and after their weekend stints.

The TXFM app is still playing Joe Donnelly's show from yesterday evening. It's actually gut wrenching listening to it all over again. Never met the man, but it did feel like one of your mates was moving away for a long time. Albeit sad, none of the musicians deaths this year affected me as much as the demise of this fine station. As long as I have been in Dublin, this was my station of choice. I always found the JNLR listenership figures very hard to believe at times. Like others on here and elsewhere, it has left a void. I always assumed that the station would be saved or at worst rebranded (again).

All we can hope is that something very similar comes along in it's place soon. As a bonus, it would be great to have Funge, Donnelly et all back in our radios again. Good luck to them in the meantime. They will be missed.

Never was your username so apt!

As we know already, Claire Beck and Kelly-Anne Byrne already got shows with Today FM, although I'm not sure how permanent Claire's is if she is going away for a while. Kelly-Anne already had been given her Saturday night show on Today FM around the time of the launch of TXFM. In the big shake-up of schedules this summer both in TX and Today FM, Kelly-Anne got her extra Sunday show on Today FM and Claire was given a new show on Today FM. At the same time, Nadine O'Regan was moved from TXFM to Today FM with her Songs in the Key of Life. Gavin Glass left TXFM for Radio Nova earlier this year.

But what about the others still there at the end of of TXFM. What will happen to Cathal Funge, Joe Donnelly and John Caddell? I suspect Joe could end up as a producer and sometime presenter either on Today FM or Newstalk - he was previously in that role on Newstalk before Phantom. The best I can think of for Cathal and John are presenting late night specialist music shows somewhere. Then there is Kate Hogan who looked after their social media - only heard of her for the first time last night! She was there with them last night in the background.

I wonder too about the part-timers like Dee Reddy, Paul Donegan, Paul Lynskey, Johnny Cullen and Shelly Grey. Esther Moore O'Donoghe is already an AA Roadwatch announcer on Today FM so should be okay. And of course, there are others who got the chop last summer: Tara Harrison, Derek Byrne (2XM would be perfect for him), Brian Keaveney, Orlagh Donnelly and Nialler9.

By the way what ever happened to Claire O'Dowd, who left a year or so after TXFM started?

She was presenting Indie Disco on Spin 1038 recently anyway, may well still be.

What does "indie disco" include on their playlist?

It's not a bad show, actually. She usually plays some remixes of songs that would be on Spin, then other stuff including the likes of Caribou, LCD, Gold Panda.

Personally, I'm a big fan of the show, but Claire O'Dowd never had the same free reign on her TX show compared to Indie Disco.

Also, today has been horrible without TXFM. Horrible.

    Anyone read this?

The most interesting bit for me is at the end. Radio Nova are actively looking to launch a new station to corner the gap in the market left by Phantom
“We are ready, willing and able” says Radio Nova CEO Kevin Branigan at the prospect of running an alternative radio station. “We feel that (an alternative radio station) would be marginally viable, if run as a complementary radio station to Radio Nova.

“If the BAI gave us the go ahead to run an alternative radio station we would happily take over the 105.2 position on the dial and we could do it within a couple of weeks
“It’s a shame that TXFM is closing down this week. There’s definitely a market for more specialist radio on the FM band. “

So I'm guessing that means Nova will be the 70s/80s hits oldies station and this new station will be the 90s hits oldies station if it goes ahead

For purely research purposes, I happened to flick over to Nova.
God good... they even advertise themselves with 'more sugar!'.
So much chat and forced 'bants'.
Oddly enough, the two tunes I did hear were Foals and Alabama Shakes.
Are they adapting their playlist I wonder?

Think I knew in the back of my head it used to be Phantom, but I stopped listening (can't recall why) in the late 90s and never caught up with it again. Remember that time Podge and Rodge hijacked proceedings? A shame as it's gone - it sounds like the radio landscape will be poorer with out it.

For those of us with old battered cars with no aux in i can recommend this to play spotify through the car radio via bluetooth... nice sound off it

I keep saying in my head "It would be time for Song Club now" etc. etc. My other half also thinks I'm cracked to be taking it all this badly. Due to the nature of my work (which sounds sinister, but it really isn't! Very bog standard) my whole day was structured around listening to TX, so I'm really lost without it because it was my constant companion. I'll get over it....some day.

UK Rajars just out, BBC Radio 6 is up again, record audience of 2.34 million.

Evans (oldies MOR music) and Grimshaw (current chart) both down, again.

And Bastille, F##king Bastille this morning.
I'd only put it on for two minutes and that came on. Newstalk it was after that, nothing else worth listening to.

People have alot of beef with two door cinema club. Ok, I can see the issue with their popular song being overplayed - but their first album is a really tight piece of work. Worth a listen.

On another note, for all you car commuters, got a Parrot mki9200 bluetooth system installed in my car last week. Can stream spotify and online stations. Really worth the money and the tx bereavement

I'm in the car here driving through Mullingar and the signal just dropped on the western ring road outside the town. Crystal clear before that. Got it as far south as Portloaise the other week. Based on that I reckon it's available to most places on FM within 40 miles of Dublin, give or take
