Cars Your Parents Drove

A quick search suggests this hasn't been done before - cars that your parents drove that have stuck with you.

On Top Gear recently Clarkson had a conversation with someone where they could both recite the regs of various cars that their dads drove. My dad changed commercial jeeps roughly every 18 months because he put 55k odd miles on them a year and he felt it made sense to change them before they became worthless. It means that I can't remember the reg numbers. I do remember been very young in an old Land Cruiser the model and colour of this one when a stone thrown up by a fuel truck smashed the front window in on us:

    Toyota_Land_Cruiser_yellow_vl.jpg

I do remember the reg number of an old W123 E200 that my mother had in this colour (metallic pea green) at some point:

    attachment.php?attachmentid=230524&stc=1

    I learned to drive in another Merc - a W202 C180:

    ebay1310_zps597d8b7a.jpg

The one we had was brown (can't find a pic of a brown one), maybe six years old and had a really noisy rear diff. I eventually broke the mirror off it and dented the front wing when I met one of my dad's mates going equally as fast as I was at a narrow point of the road. :(

Finally, my mother also drove two of these at different times:

    CITROEN-CX-25-TURBO-2-01.jpeg

A Citroen CX (not sure of exact models or years) with air suspension that didn't always lift.

I did start a thread some time ago, regarding remembering your dads/parents old number plates, if my own memory serves me correctly.

    :P

Will dig it out tomorrow if I can find it.

    ;)

But to get back on topic, there was at least a few Datsuns/Nissans, a Ford Sierea (spelling) Estate, and the number plate I remember was for a Morris Ital.

Hydraulic suspension ;) . Gorgeous, classy, but prone to breakdowns.

    My oul fella had the following in the 70's;
    Cortina
Vauxhall Viva (utter crap, never started)
    Renault 4
    Fiat 128
    Ford Escort
    Datsun 120Y (brilliant car)

    80's

    Datsun 100A
    Datsun 110
    Carina I
    Fiat Uno (excellent, seriously economical)
    Fiat Regatta
    Ford Fiesta
    Mazda 323
    Nissan Sunny
    Ford Escort (crap)
    Golf II (around 1989)

After the first Golf, it was 5 Polo's on the trot then two Golf Plus' until he had to give up driving.

ha! my Dad had one of these too

we went on holidays to Galway, the engine seized when we were there so we had to stay on another week while it got replaced. He had to travel back to Dublin on the bus to get the money out of the credit union to pay for it!

While pictures are not of actual dad's cars, but they represent exactly how those cars looked (including colours and versions)

I can recite all number plates of my dad's cars, as well as those of all cars my granddads had :)

In no particular order, colours not correct in pictures used, and only including cars from when I was a kid.

Notable mentions are the BRIGHT green Rekord saloon and yellow Fiesta Mk1. The Rekord was super comfy, but visually was an eyesore. Very bright green paintwork with sand coloured interior.

Great thread. My favourite car that my dad owned was a Jensen interceptor. I can't remember the year but it was an early 70s model. I thought it was so cool, still do.

Can't link pic in phone but here is wiki page : http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jensen_Interceptor

    VW Beetle
    2nd Gen Ford Escort
    Mark II Ford Granada
Mitsubishi Lancer (Think it was a 1983)
    SEAT Malaga (Two of them)
    SEAT Toledo
Nissan Micra K11 (Two of them)
    3rd Gen Toyota Hiace
    4th Gen Toyota Hiace

    I'm sure there's a few I'm missing there...

My old man drove a jensen interceptor mk111 sp ....he bought it off a lord Peterson i think in limerick in the late 70s. 7.2 litres of chrysler pure muscle......it was horrendously unreliable, cooked in traffic and plagued with electrical quirks. Thats my claim to fame, it nearly bankrupt the old man but god when we had it, it was glorious.

First Car of my Dad's that I remember was one of these - same colour as well:

    800px-Mini_Metro_1983_pre_any_facelifts_1275cc.JPG

That was replaced by one of these:
    DSC03011.jpg

On a temporary basis, while his first Company Car was on order, which was:

    800px-1986_Vauxhall_Cavalier_SRI.jpg
but only a 1.6 GLSi model, rather than the SRi pictured.

When a Director left, it was cheaper to send the Cavalier back, so he took one of these over for the remaining year of the lease.

    volvo-740-23-turbo_blue_6.jpg

740 GLE 2.3 4 speed with overdrive. Loved that car, full black leather with heated seats.

Replaced in August 89 by one of these (without the spoiler):
    i654096.jpg
One of the first production cars to come with a CD player as standard, but from Jan 1990, so we had a tape deck - Vauxhall Carlton CDX - ours was a 2.0i Auto.

3 years later, that was changed for:
    Xantia_1-L.jpg
Xantia 2.0i - can't remember the specification - first one I got to drive after I passed my test.

Went downhill after that - Laguna 2.0i until he was retired, replaced by a Focus, replaced by his current Focus.

My Parents Have been so typically Irish with car purchases

since 1992-3 (as far back as I can remember)

    dad :
toyota carinas up till the avensis came out (changed every year or 2)
    toyota avensis
    another avensis
    citroen berlingo
    another berlingo
    opel zafira
    avensis verso
    another avensis verso
Kia sorento (2006 , the roaring tiger years)
and since then its been a string of Hyundai santa-fe's

every single one of them in bog spec as low as it could go.

    ma :
    nissan micra van
    corolla
    another corolla
avensis (while my da had the vans)
    another avensis
    another avensis
Lexus rx400h (yet again another celtic tiger buy)
    lexus rx450h
    Audi Q5

with the exception of the Q5 every single one of those cars has no options on it , the Q5 atleast has the s-line kit .

With the exception of a few of the carinas and the berlingo's every one of the cars was a shade of silver "because its easier to sell"
