    Hi,
First up, sorry if this is in the wrong place.

I recently registered a couple of domain names. It may be a while before I get around to actually putting a site together.

After registering them, I became aware that there are ways to try to make a few cents from "parking" them and seeing if people click on the links.

My names were never registered before and I read then that unless the site had content, they are unlikely to get any clicks at all and so it might be a waste of time.

So I had a question. Can I point my new domain name to a different site and hope that it gets indexed or whatever? Is that legal? I will give an analogy. Suppose I registered "johnmcdonaldscafe.com" and forwarded it to "mcdonalds.com" for a while. Would there be any point in doing so? Would that mean that it might appear on search engines? Would it also be subsequently useful in having my eventual site nearer the top of the searches?

If any of this is illegal, I won't do it. I'm just asking if it can be done. I'm doing some reading up on "forwarding" and "masking" right now :-) . stuff about 301 vs 302 temporary vs permanent!

Thanks for your help in advance

If you're concerned about the long term SEO benefits, you'd be better off spending 20 minutes on Blogger. 10 mins making a blog (eg www.johnmcdonaldscafe.blogspot.com) and some content (eg one post saying "John McDonald's cafe, opening soon in Shop St, Specialists in purple pastries",) and 10 mins re-directing the blog to the domain.

That way search engines will (eventually) find your site an index it.

If you just point to www.mcdonalds.com, then there is no reason for the search engines to find it at all (AFAIK).

If the domain is "good" (and that's incredibly subjective) then it *might* get "type in" traffic ie. people will get to it by accident

If it isn't (and most aren't) then it probably won't get any traffic unless there's content..

Pointing your domain at someone else's site won't give your domain any traffic - as there won't be any links to it etc.,

As for the legalities .. if the domain is something like companyXSucks.tld then you might run into issues
