Turning a grass garden into a meadow?

Hi, I live in the countryside with about 3/4 of a garden with grass. I have 3 kids and want to minimiise the time maintaining the grass. Has anyone any suggestions on how to ( hopefully cheaply ) to do this? I was thinking of letting parts of it grow wild like a meadow? The kids have a section cornered off to play football…
