This is meant to be happening in July? Has anyone heard of this? Obviously it will have an impact, and residents will be completely dependent on town councillors and communication with Kildare CoCo.

Is this a long term move does anyone know?

All town councils completely cease to exist in the entire country after the local elections in May. There won't be any town councillors.

There will be no Athy, or any other town council anywhere in the country, after July. Outside of Dublin only Cork and Galway cities will have separate local authorities as Limerick and Waterford cities are being abolished.

There will be municipal districts but they will be effectively committees - crucially they will have no seperate legal existence from the county council.

Right, I didn't know that. Obviously there will be some structure to replace the existing, any details of that anywhere?

Kildare County Council will assume all services in to their existing setup.

(ignore previous content I had here about former UDCs, Athy was one too)

The Municipal District of Athy will have six members elected to the area and to the County Council. Towns included in the District are Castledermot and Monasterevin along with a number of other villages in the area.

The link below is the statutory instrument that gives effect to the changes.

Maybe, just maybe Athy will start to wake up and there possibly will be positive development with all the conflicting naysayers that abounded in the town council for many years now gone.

For a town that has an unbelievable amount of potential, (Canal and River being just one!) it has been stuck in a rut for decades due to utter unaction and infighting between councillors.

You're not wrong there. Would love to see the marina developed into something you'd see in Europe, and light up the bridge and castle at night, would look brilliant.

I have petrol and a match, if needed. This policy sounds good and if extended to sufficient parts of Athy, may well lead to progress.
