What would be better for a business app or mobile website?

Just wondering what people would think would be better for a small business to have. An app or a mobile site as a sub domain of the main site e.g mob.yourdomain.com.
Are mobile sites popular? I don't seem to see many businesses with them.

Every business with a website these days (within reason) should have a mobile-optimised version, or should be designed to be responsive.

You generally wouldn't advertise the URL of your mobile site if it is a seperate set of pages as such. What is normally done is implementation of a script which detects the screen size/viewport of the device being used, and redirects the user's browser to the mobile site if it is less than or of a specific size. If your site has been designed based on a responsive framework, redirection of the browser to a seperate URL isn't necessary. The site simply renders based on the screensize it is presented with.

The move lately is from that of the traditional HTML/CSS design with fixed widths and tables to responsive/bootstrap based design. If you are getting a website done, it is a critical question to ask of your designer in order to future-proof and aid user friendliness of your site.

Our site automatically offers mobile users the desktop or mobile version the mobile site gets a decent amount of traffic the vast majority of it is for opening times and location more than browsing though. For most businesses a mobile optimised website is much more important than an app.

An app means the user has to go and download the app - if its just for basic contact details etc most will give up at that stage and not bother downloading an app. Unless you have a specific reason for having an app then don't bother with one, it will be a waste of money.

Your website should be designed in such a way that it is responsive, the site will adjust to display correctly depending on the device and the layout and menus will change to suit the device be it a laptop, tablet or mobile. You dont need a seperate domain for the mobile devices, its the same domain, the same website, just being displayed differently depending on the device.
