Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Eibar, a Basque club, were promoted to the Spanish second division for this season. Compared to most of the other teams in the league, their resources and fanbase are tiny, yet 33 games into the season they stand two points from top, four ahead of third.

They have a great chance of being promoted, but unbelievably as things stand, relegation looks more likely.

It comes down to a rule designed to about capital reserves that was designed to prevent teams from spending themselves into administration. However, because Eibar are punching so far above their weight it looks like this rule may sink them, despite the fact they are in a healthy financial position.

PS the article says they are top, which I presume was accurate at the time of writing.

One win in their last 5, and just had their first defeat in 12 at the weekend.. Starting to slip, talk of relegation probably affecting performances

Sounds like the kind of esoteric, niche team we as Irish people should be getting right behind.

Maybe we could start a forum about them?

Domestic league badly neglected, couldn't give a monkeys about Spanish 2nd Division side.

Unless it's Liverpool. I'll sell my ****ing soul for Liverpool.

Their stadium only holds 6,500 people. That's just incredible that they could be playing Barca/Real next season.

EDIT: The rule is absolutely ludicrous.

Would the even be allowed to play in the top division with that stadium? Nobody wants these povs playing the big league, time they accepted that.

That's a fine elitist attitude you've got there. Was it expensive?

Presumably they might use another stadium to milk demand for the Madrid and Barcelona games.

The rule will be changed. There's no way the authorities will relegate a club that is in the black when half the other Spanish teams are crippled with debt.

    Surely they can appeal?

I took the bus from Bilbo to Donosti and Eibar is roughly half way between.

Small enough place. I'm surely Athletic or Sociedad would be happy to accommodate them where one was away that weekend.

You have too much faith in the spanish authorities.

I've heard that theres a team in the trans dniester separatist region we should be interested in as well.

Now that Ukraine is a bit dodgy who knows whats going to happen there and with their football clubs.

Time to shift our gaze east.

I really enjoyed the Funny names thread btw.

    http://www.whoateallthepies.tv/la_liga/190809/spanish-minnows-eibar-buy-barcelonas-unused-title-confetti-to-celebrate-their-own-promotion-to-the-top-flight.html
Relative minnows SD Eibar are currently in the process of saving up to fund a concerted crack at Spain’s top flight next season after winning the Segunda Division by a single point.

Following two remarkable successive promotions from the lower reaches of Spanish football, Eibar are currently too small to technically be allowed to play in La Liga next season as the league requires all Primera Division sides to have a minimum capital of €2 million.

Eibar’s currently stands at €400,00 though they are planning a fund-raising campaign and shares sale to rectify the situation.

Indeed, in an effort to reserve funds for little luxuries like improved player wages and new signings, Eibar decided not to shell out on fancy, brand new confetti to hurl about at their promotion party and instead opted to buy second-hand.

Realising that Barcelona had bought lots of red/blue confetti in preparation for winning the Liga title on the last weekend of the season before losing out to Atletico Madrid, Eibar contacted the Catalan giants and struck a deal to buy all of their unwanted confetti.

Barca were unable to keep hold of the confetti for future use as, as anyone with a working knowledge of confetti already knows, it tends to clump together if stored for too long. Confetti must be fresh.

According to ABC.es, Eibar will now use Barca’s cast-off confetti at their promotion party on Saturday.

Just won their first La Liga game against Sociedad. Seriously impressive achievement by this club - surprised more of the hipsters haven't gotten on board :pac:

Great start for them. Their ground is so small too, I'd love to see them stay up even if its just one season. Its incredible that they have made it as far as they have and to then win their first ever match against a team who finished sixth last season is just unbelievable.

Eibar were relegated this season, but now look set to retain their status after Elche took their place after tax irregularities. Mad.
