Realistic dream cars that you might own one day.

So, my own research has given me an idea of making a thread here :D

What would be your realistic choice of a dream car? Something that you owned, but could use each day?

    I've three candidates in total.

    1. Nissan GT-R
    Nissan-Gt-R-4-540x960.jpg

Why: in my opinion, it's the best of both worlds.
Which other car does 0-60 in 3.5 seconds and returns up to 30mpg if you're a careful driver? It's an incredible car, looks great (in my opinion but each to their own) and isn't that bad to buy. It's only €57k with VRT and a year's tax (2008 model).

    2. BMW 535d M-Sport (F10)
    BMW-F10-M-Sports-Package-01-540x960.jpg

Why: The BMW 535d is powered by a diesel, while it may not sound like an idea of a car, think about it: 313hp, 0-60 in 5.5 seconds and it returns 40 mpg even with a lead foot! Ideal car for going to and from work in comfort, refinement and with plenty of power.

    3. BMW 750Li (F02)
    2009-BMW-750Li-F02-USA-version-1-540x960.jpg

Why: If you're a person that wants to have a piece of quiet for a while, the 750Li is ideal for you. If you're a person that wants to press the accelerator pedal to overtake that Micra in front of you, the 750Li is ideal for you. If you're a person that wants to sit back and relax, while going 200 km/h on the Autobahn, the 750Li is ideal for you.
    €1200 tax, V8 power, 35mpg. Not bad.

Honda S2000, just love the look of them. Definitely will have one one day.

Z3 m coupe, honda s2000, e46 m3, gt86 (minus the horrid bog standard wheels) for me please.

    Maserati Quattro Porte

Totally impractical mind you, but it'd be fun!

Lotus Carlton, can't explain why they just do it for me. Nissan gtr or r34 gtr, I wouldn't be disappointed with either of those.

It might not be a 'dream car' but it's a really nice looking car that looks miles better than the convertible. And not too horrendously expensive...

    1. Most realistic- Audi B5 S4, such a sleeper :)

    2. Maserati GT Stradale, After my lottery win.

    Jag F-Type,
For me, the best looking non supercar on the market, drool....

Although at a starting price of about 100k, it may be stretching the 'realistic' part:)

I'm going to set my sights very low here...

    bmw-e39-m5-08.jpg

A proper M5, sleeper looks and an unbelievable engine/chassis

    r75_05.jpg

With cream leather and the BMW diesel.

    ek9.jpg

Solid all rounder, massive performance, handling, reliability and cheap maintenance.

Im lucky enough that I've owned 1 of mine already

FD2 civic type R, best of all the Honda's I've owned and a car I really couldn't fault and would recommend to anyone

    mtp9gg.jpg

R34 GTR - I've actually been chasing some at auction recently but getting a good one within reasonable money is hard. I really want bayside blue but wouldnt take much to twist my arm for another colour

    23su9ub.jpg

And close to the 34 Is a Honda NSX - One of the only Honda's I haven't owned I need to get this one out of my system. Still a pricey car to get from Japan and fairly thin on the ground even from the uk

Bold choice but mine at the moment is this:

Failing that a 2.4 Ti Spec 159 in Carbonio Grey with red leather gives me the bloody fizzy sensation James May talks about :)
For those that don't know what Ti Spec looks like:

Finest looking estate car I know. the Ti trim really sets it off. Get the 2.4 and you have twin chrome exhaust pipes.

I really plan to own one of these in the next couple of years..
    911Targa3.2Jubile.jpg

Other than that I really like the idea of a really quick saloon XJR, Quatroporte or M5. I think I'd like to own a really nice hot hatch focus RS most likely. I'd like something like a nice off-roader too, something comfy that can handle the mud. It is my mission to own a nice classic 911 though.

The 2.4 JTDm engine is quite a beast on that car; Although the 2.0 JTDm I briefly tried in Italy in December is a good example as well.

Me, I'd go for the 1750 TBi - can't exclude I'll try to get one in the future; For now, I'm content with the 1.9 JTS I have :)

As for the "realistic dream cars you could own", I won't put it past me to chase after a Boxster in the future - since I was a child, I was always kind of partial to convertibles; So if you can have a bit of performance on the side, it wouldn't hurt.

I do appreciate the technology behind the S2000 and the Skyline R34, if only they had a decently designed bodywork frown.png

The 2.0 I think are 170 and the 2.4 could be either 200 or 210.
Simple remap can bring it close to 250bhp :)
I'd love the Giulietta Cloverleaf, same Tbi engine but lighter

    Nah I haven't unfortunately.
What did you not like about if you don't mind me asking? Which engine also?
It would never be able to compete against the 159, I think Alfa was stupid to drop it without even having a facelift version or replacement.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,843 ✭✭✭✭bear1

I have heard about the interior not being fantastic.
The Alfas of new have lost that one thing that made special... But I don't want to spoil the thread speaking about Alfas only :)

Yes, 170 HP on the 2.0 JTDm. I am no lover of the diesel engines, but these are objectively good, they don't even sound too "tractorish" when running.

Alfa Romeo was indeed pretty conservative with the maps - the 2.0 I drove is my dad's, and he's toying with the remap idea since an Alfa garage told him it could easily handle 190-200 HP. Every now and then he goes like "yeah, it goes well as it is...but 200 hp...". And he's 61 :D

250 in the 2.4 should be achievable :)

    OSI wrote: »

And it is supposed to be, it's a full market segment (almost one and a half, as explained below) down from the 159.

In reality, they have been monumentally idiotic with the way they handled the whole project.

Besides all the technical things that could have been handled better, the 159 suffered from "market segment displacement": its size and mass caused it to be perceived more as a replacement for the 166 than of the 156 by the general public; Alfa/Fiat were aware of this from the early stage, when a panel of motoring journalists they invited to a closed door presentation pointed it out, but decided to do nothing.

I'll keep it realistic as well. I'd love to own a 70s car with some smart styling and well kept running gear. Currently I like the idea of having a Mark One Celica. Not sure how realistic it is but a man can dream.

A 2008 sti impreza for me. Can be got for a very reasonable price of 18k and since it's a 2008 tax is ~1k/year compared to the 2.5k/year for later models. The flat four grumble is just so satisfying.

The pipe dream would be a Toyota Supra TT. Ever since Gran Turismo 1 on the PS1 I've always wanted one. They just don't make cars like it any more.

Right, three personal dream cars I will hopefully own...

    1. Toyota Ae86.

    AE86_1.jpg

I've always had a soft spot for the Ae86. In an ideal world, I'd be driving a white over black Levin coupe, but if anything fairly clean came up at the right price I'd jump at it!

    2. Nissan Skyline R34 Sedan.

    nissan_skyline_photos_6_b.jpg

Don't ask why, but I've always liked the idea of an R34 sedan! Get it tastefully kitted and then lowered to the point where it's bum scrapes while it's sliding about the place

    3. Mazda Rx7.

    Shine-FD3S-Burnout-black200.jpg

A black Rx7. Getaway in Stockholm style. Nuff said.

Needless to say, there's a bit of an RWD fanboy in me :o
