Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I have a confession. I'm after getting VERY lazy. All I did today was hit the car with Bilt Hamber auto-foam, rinsed it well and called it a day.

I'm nearly ashamed to mention it......

Thanks for the recommendations. I’m based in Dublin but could handle a nice drive to Offaly, I near the roads are great there.

Folks can anyone recommend me a decent quick detailer spray?

I've got great results from Farecla G3 Bodyshop Detailer.
    Available in Halfords

    Sonax BSD

Turtle wax hybrid ceramic spray coating.

    Carpro Reload.

    Gtechniq C2v3.

Plenty more out there but they are all very good products.

C2V3 is more of a sealant than quick detailer. Gtechniq's quick detailer is simply called QD.

Just a heads up to anyone looking for Auto Brite products that i'd highly recommend MMC Autoparts in Banbridge. Was able to pick up a couple of extra snow foam bottles, some tar remover and alloy cleaner etc. They don't have a postage/courier option to the South yet but they are working on it.

Probably worth a visit for anyone heading to Newry or Belfast as there only 5 mins of the dual carriageway.

Was able to get mine done yesterday after I got back. Defiantly need to get the wheels off at some stage as they've a lot of tar in the barrels now.

Got a small very shallow mark/scratch on the high gloss plastic pillar at the driver side door. Its about an inch long, and I dont feel it if I rub my finger nail across it. Any suggestions for removal? Its not obvious at all except to me. I see it every time I get in the car :(

Would my local motor factors stock IPA? Or is it only something you can only get from a detailer shop?

Pharmacies stock it too as far as I know

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,854 ✭✭✭✭MetzgerMeister

IPA can only really be bought in pharmacies under the term rubbing alcohol. Motor factors stock something similar as pre-paint or paint prep i.e to wipe a panel down before painting.

Note that IPA will not remove polish from paintwork as effectively as Gtechniq Panel Wipe.

I've a question around paint protection. I'm a total novice when it comes to this, so hoping to get some advise.

I've just picked up a new car. I didn't go for the paint protection 'option' from the dealer, seems way over priced.

I'm looking for any recommendations for paint protection I can apply myself.

On my previous car, in terms of washing, I had been using the AutoGlym Polar Series range. It's designed to use used to with a power washer. It's 3-step, snow foam, wash and then a seal. The seal is only applied every few months.

Beyond regular washing and quarterly seal, is there anything else I should be applying to it?

    Thanks.

Guys can someone recommend a decent Pre wash please?

I think its what im missing to shift the heavier dirt, before snow foaming. Particularly around lower panels etc.

If a car is very dirty I just use Surfex HD, I use it for paintwork, door jams, interior, engine bay, wheel arches etc pretty much the whole car once you dilute it to the appropriate ratios

Depending on how dirty it is, I would use surfex HD @ 10:1, 4:1 might be a little strong for regular use and may strip your LSP.

    Folks

I gave up washing my own cars a few years back with kids coming along not having time etc

I might try get back into it now , but realistically what’s the best case scenario time wise for a decent wash routine ? I’m low on time and when I used do it I’d take hours washing and drying etc

I’d like to do it but in an efficient way, any tips for a quick but decent routine including the bits I’d need !

Getting a di vessel would be a good time saver, no more drying!

Same as this. Have got a new to me car that I'd like to keep looking well.
Have got a bucket with grit guard, garden hose, washing nut for car and wheels.
Turtle wax car shampoo and wax
    Tyre gel.
    Drying towels

Anything else needed for regular washing?
Would aim to wax as well....any recommendations or alternatives? Its a white car if that makes any difference.

    Thanks

I wouldn't bother with the Turtle Wax shampoo unless it is pH neutral. Get a good pH neutral shampoo and finish with a wax sealant spray. TW wax sealant is both reasonably priced and very impressive.

Recently purchased a 08 Saab 9-3 aero sports wagon.
Paint work is fairly rough it's never going to be perfect but I'd still like to tidy it up if possible.

Anyone care to advise on how hard or soft the paint is generally on Saab's?

Does the noticeable "fragrance" from Bilt Hamber Auto Wheel always linger after for a few days or did I just do a bad job at rinsing it?

It does linger depending on what surface you're washing the car on. When I had gravel the smell stayed almost constantly. Now hat I have tarmac the smell is gone after my snowfoam step (always do wheels first). However you always need a shower afterwards because when AutoWheel atomizes it goes everywhere including my hair, clothes etc. I even have a different pair of runners specifically for doing the car because of this.

My car got a rough going over by the rats with wings. A serious going over. Almost as if someone was throwing small lumps of cement onto the roof - same colour and virtually the same consistency. Have never seen bird chite like it before.

Anyway have small area of mild scratches from one particularly stubborn dropping; can anyone recommend a good product for removing the scratches and also a good product for tackling this disgusting mess should it happen again (which it will).

Having a sealant on there or wax will make the poops easier to remove.
For the odd small bird poop I use Adam's Detail spray. Spray on and let it soak for a few minutes while covered with a microfiber. Then gently wipe. Never scrub.
For a major attack which happens to me when I visit my parents I will wait until evening time and give it the foam gun with bilt hamber auto foam. It gets most of it off.

For polishing out the scratches you have a whole world of choice. But I recently used turtle wax ceramic polish and wax and was very impressed. I picked up a da polisher in argos for 60 euros and its really good. I got some pads and a smaller backing plate on ebay. I'm thinking of making a YouTube video I'm so impressed with myself.

Won a free car wash on the CircleK game this morning. Are these still advised against? They seem to have advanced a lot in recent years and at least look they aren't going to rip the paint off the car anymore. Might try and swap it for something else if they're still considered crap :D

Yeah I wouldn't be first in line to use them to be honest. More harm than good

Ordered 2 towels, load of microfibres cloths, waxing pads, wash mitt & the clay mitt.

Note to future self: never buy from wo-wo again.
Very bad quality. Towels were washed & dried before first use. These towels are supposed to drying towels yet they shed fibres like no other.

The microfibre cloths have a tag that impossible to detach from cloth without ripping pu the cloth threads.

Even at 80% off, I still feel ripped off.

I don't think I'm gonna risk using either the wash mitt or clay mitt given how bad for my car the other things have been. The waxing pads were alright.

    Shoddy, shoddy, shoddy.

Isn't that one of the reasons we wash them prior to use?

    As for the label?
This hasn't bothered me, just fold them in four keeping the tag tucked up inside and just be careful as you go.

The wash mitt looks identical to my Incredimitt which is serving me well after possibly 7 years.

You must be used to very expensive mf cloths etc if you think these have ripped you off at 80% reduction in cost.

The towels are still shedding even after 2/3 washes.

The microfibres clothes I previously bought were ~€10 for 10 from amazon (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004SH3SDM/). The WoWo cloths aren't color sealed, have very short pile.

Not much point in having cheap stuff if they don't do as they're intended to.

For the label on the MFs, use a scissors (preferably a small nail scissors) and cut them off as close to the pile as you can.
