SLR Service Centre Ireland (Nikon)

Hi all, can anyone tell me if they have ever dealt with the SLR Service Centre in Meath? How long does it normally take them to repair an item - I guess that all depends on what kind of repair needs to take place?

I sent a camera in for repair, it took them 3 weeks to get around to estimating what worked was needed (it needed the sensor and viewfinder cleaned). They told me they were quite busy and I guess as the only Nikon service centre in Ireland they must be. I was told after agreeing to the estimate costs and work needed that they'd be in contact early this week but after not hearing from them by Thursday I gave them a shout and was told that the camera, a Nikon D3100, couldn't be worked on just yet as they needed a specific part for it.

It's over a month now since I sent in the item and I'm just wondering is this normal or am I just being impatient?

I've dealt with them a few times, granted its been more high end gear. I've found them to be brilliant. Fast turn around times, good prices and great work.

One example was a lens falling into the canal. I retrieved it, sent it off and it was taken apart, chemically cleaned, new aperture blades put in. No motor or electronic work needed as it didn't get wet somehow. 5+ years later and its still perfect and only €200.

Another example is a 24-70 2.8 lens I bought in the US was defective (took a drop before purchase it seemed). They inspected it, sent it to Nikon UK, who said it would have to be sent to Nikon USA for warranty repair, sent back to Meath who sent it back to me and the rest was between me and Nikon USA. Great service from them, they did everything they could to help for free.

If they are busy and your stuff isn't pro/high end it might get bumped down the priority list a bit. Give them a call, explain its been nearly month and you are unhappy.

As you said they are waiting on a specific part. It could be a common enough issue with the D3100 so there is a bit of lead time on it.

Hi Pete4130, thanks for your reply. In the end I gave up and asked them to send me back the camera but it is good to know that they are a decent crowd and generally do a good job. I guess because my camera is low end it's not a high priority for them. I've seen some Youtube videos on how to clean the Viewfinder so I may give it a go myself.
