The E39 in my unbiased view ( ) is the pinnacle of the 5 Series design, followed by the F10 and then the E34.

Do ya think? If you ask me, and my detailed expertise with bmws the e81 is the nicest followed by the e29, the e55, the e1155 and finally, my least favourite the e12.

The E39 in my unbiased view (:pac:) is the pinnacle of the 5 Series design, followed by the F10 and then the E34.

I suppose what I meant is that in 1990 - the BMW was a premium CAR - in 2006 it was turning into a premium BRAND.

Audi are the same really if you compare a 1990 Audi 80 with a 2006 Audi A4 - same deal gone from premium car to premium brand.

In saying that - I do like the new A3

I remember the Audi 80 as more of a quality product, with nobody under any illusions that it was anything but a posh vw. it had the safety thing (Procon ten) and it was galvanised. It wouldn't have had the same status as a bmw or Mercedes though.

I can't see too much changed tbh.

Must say I agree with the e39 been probably the nicest 5 series bmw have ever made but its so hard to get a good one.

In my eyes the 2 nicest bmws are

    e39 m5
    e60 m5

    Had one.
    2.0 / 6 cyl. Carburetor,
    Man was that thing thirsty.
Wasn't too bad until she got hot under the collar and the pistons went a bit oval.
Best was 7mpg around town and 12 on a run after that.
Plus a gallon of oil every couple of hundred miles Ha.

Sign as on she got sold to a guy that wanted it for a diesel conversion.
Bought a black manta after that.

There was TWO E12 5 series in my parish alone that had diesel conversions.

Yes indeed it is, getting great mpg from it too :D
Nicer looking than its sister car, the Skoda Rapid :)

My mother octavia has that engine and it's been very reliable no issues over the last 3.5 years from new great mpg too. I think they are one of the better of the modern Diesel engines on offer,

The Octavia tax is €180 and mine is €200 so there must be a slight difference in the two, but I hope mine is as reliable ;)

Her one is 200 euro to tax as its 2011 so would be exact same as yours engine wise. I think the new model octavia might be slightly tweaked to bring it down more. But ultimately vag only have 1 1.6tdi engine accross the group there might be slight tweaks in emissions and power output but ultimately the same basic engine.

  • Registered Users Posts: 934 ✭✭✭techie

Ah ok, was looking at a 131 Octavia when I bought this, and preferred the Toledo, that Octavia had the €180 tax.
