the curse of creeping butterup

Got out to do some weeding yesterday. One of the beds has loads of that awful creeping buttercup. Its so difficult to successfully pull out the roots, I tried with a dinner knife
Lots of them are wedged right in at the base of plants in the bed
Can anyone offer any advice. I really don't want to have to spend the rest of the year trying to get rid of these every time they appear
