Hi Guys, Just wondering is it the public health nurse we should go to with our 2 and a half year old who seems to have rhinitis/allergies or do we need to see a specialist (cost a fortune). He always has a runny nose and it goes into his chest causing a bad chesty cough. Has anyone else had this problem as I would love to know where to go to try and have it eased at least for my little guy .

We have an awful problem with this with out 20mth old little man for the last maybe 4 months too, its just awful. But I would imagine that you would go to your Gp to get a referral to a specialist? I could be completely wrong. Anything sort of medical like that my phn has always sent me to my Gp to be on the safe side and get checked out.

It's the GP who can refer you to a specialist. The PHN can do nothing to diagnose allergies.

My 20 month old has exact problem, we didn't exactly know what we were dealing with, he seemed
to always have a cough!!! GP kept handing out anitbiotics, I took it in my own hands and went privately
to see a consultant who referred us to hospital for an overnight stay and numberous tests, conclusion was
nasal drip and prescribed an anti-histamine to be taken daily, it has helped, nose still runny but cough seems less
distressing for him, talk to your gp or go directly to a private consultant in your area for help.
    So glad I did...............

Hi rose, if you wouldn't mind could you on me what hospital you attended? We have the same problem with our 13 month old and the gp thinks he may turn out to me asthmatic. He's been on steroids and antibiotics but it still hasn't fully cleared. I'd love to get a second opinion at this stage.

and just wondering, can the GP refer you to a public hospital for these tests or is it only private consultants?

Public as well as private but public will take years.
