Same here! Does anybody have any fairly accurate information on what the odds actually are? I've heard something like 50-1!

As far as I know it is closer to 15-1. 150,000 applicants for 10,000 places.

    Honest.

I thought the number of spaces for UK residents was 125,000 and that the 10,000 spaces were for the overseas entrants?

There only 40,000 places in total.
More than half of them go to Charities afaik. I doubt more than a couple of thousand get in on the oversea ballot tbh. Robin will probably know the exact figures.

That includes people who pay through the nose for travel packages.

I just spoke with the London marathon people on the phone. The girl I spoke to said there was a 3-1 chance for the overseas ballot!

Speaking of, has anyone done this? Thinking of doing it? I'd love to get some feedback on whether or not people would rate the service/accommodation etc? It's a plan B that I would not rule out, I know its a ridiculous price but its something I will give thought to if unsuccessful in October.

3/1? I think you've been badly misinformed there.
More like 50/1 in the overseas ballot, if not bigger.

This years results seem to have sorted out the nationalities a bit and made it more realistic numbers than previous years where they claimed there was only something like 10's of people running from Ireland or from France, and anyone staying in The Strand Palace will know for a fact that both of those numbers would be way off the mark.

This years results are showing 442 Irish and 647 French which sounds more like it, but a significant number of any European runner is likely to have entered via the UK ballot, either because they live in the UK or they have a friend who does.

It's very approximately along the lines of:
    Celebs/ elite/ championship = probably 2-3 thousand
    Fast GFA = about 1500?
Then about 50% of what is left goes to charity
What is then left is mostly ballot, but there are a number of places given to UKA clubs based on the number of members they have (these places still have to be paid at the same rate as the rest of us) this is probably only a couple of thousand places though and the places are not awarded to clubs until after the ballot entries are paid for.

Yes Indeed. I registered with the UK GFA as Irish.

I'd Imagine only a tiny proportion of the overseas people listed in the results got through in the international ballot.

There is quite a few under the various nationalities with UK clubs next to their names as well which would usually mark them out as being UK resident so not needing to bother with the international ballot.

It varies a lot. I got a room there for very cheap the first year I stayed there as I'd only booked last minute'ish and it was through a 3rd party hotel site.

They only release a certain number of rooms at a time though as for this year I looked a couple of times and it was claiming to be fully booked, a month later it had rooms again, then it was fully booked, then it had rooms again when some other friends booked. It isn't cheap unless you get lucky on timing, but the convenience of it is tough to beat I think.

Hedging my bets, both can be canceled as well. Depends on the dosh situation at the time whether we stay in the Strand. Saturday and Sunday nights.

    Hi

Myself and my wife really want to do the London Marathon next year for charity.. But to do out chosen charity package would commit to raising over 7k between us .. Which is a huge ask as we both have the same connections etc. .. So what I was hoping to do is purchase a private package and we would both get to run and not have the pressure of 7k over us, we would still attempt to raise as much as possible and donate to the charity.

So basically anyone know of any good package providers for the marathons ?

    Cheers

They're the only ones I know of. Haven't used them myself (yet), but they seem to get good reviews from anyone who has.

I never got the supposedly delayed confirmation of entry to the ballot email. Guess my chances are quite slim :)

Ah, so this was just a thinly veiled "look where I've gone on holiday" post...and I fell right into your trap. :D

Ah here now, when the flights to somewhere warm cost the same as heading home to Dublin that's not much to be showing off about! I'm kinda hoping that someone knows of a link that can be used to check if we're in or out. Would like to know sooner rather than later whether I'll be doing hard miles running or cycling this winter...

I just had to make an unexpected trip back home over lunch ...

...but there is no sign of my magazine yet.

Anybody know if anything is sent out to GFA entries aside from the Registration packs in March? Just want to know if I should be expecting anything in the post

You should also get the acceptance Magazine around the same time as the succesful ballot entries (i.e. in the next week or two).

Not got my magazine yet, postman is taking ages today.

Looks like this year it is IronMan on the rejection magazine, last year it was a Smurf I think. The accepted magazine gets some models that don't look like they know how to run from the picture posted on Facebook. Think it would be better to have a picture of someone who can actually run rather than people standing on one leg. :)
