VW Passat Automatic Gearbox Problems

I have a 2006 Passat Petrol Automatic (6 Speed) with high mileage ( 200K KM) which now has very rough gear changes (up to 4th gear). I have been told that the geargbox needs to be overhauled/rebuilt

I believe its an Aisin gearbox.

Anybody have any recommendations for someone to do it? I'm willing to drive to UK / Europe if needs be to try avoid a massive bill.

    Cheers

Have you tried changing the oil? It makes a dramatic difference.

This. Drain and refill with good full-synth ATF.

Can this be carried out by most garages? Any recommendations?

Has the oil ever been changed in it?

Take oil being "sealed for life" as being sealed for the life of the warranty ( unless the warranty is more than 3 years) . All oil degrades over time and should be changed.

    Based near Dun Laoghaire

As far as I am aware, the gearbox has never been opened up, so the oil has never been changed to my knowledge.

Tom McManus on the Clonliffe Road specialises in that sort of thing.

If it's the dsg they need oil changes every 40 k miles if this isn't recorded in the book and on the receipt I wouldn't buy one.

As far as I recall, the unit is not a DSG.

Maybe, a lot of the petrol auto's of that time were torque converter.

    Is it a 1.6 ?

Torque converter auto's are usually very reliable.

    Yeah, its a 1.6. I think the unit is a 09G i.e. an Aisin TF60SN

I don't think the torque converter type were 6 speed, 4 or maybe 5 speed at most. If it is a torque converter type a fluid change could sort a lot of its problems. No harm in trying.

It'd be a big relief if that'll do the job. The alternatives go from expensive-ish to 3K+ !
Crazy money to spend on an 8 yr old car with high mileage.

I had an issue with the gears jerking on my Vectra a few weeks ago and took it to Autotranz in Walkinstown and they were brilliant. He would probably be able to tell you straight away (with a short spin) what needs to be done and what it would cost.

Definitely worth trying to change the transmission fluid first though.

changing the oil is a waste of time and money,it's 140 euro for the fluid and filter plus labour .The valve body is the problem been there done that google o9g transmisson problems

Looks like you're spot on, this thread makes depressing reading http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?5488563-My-experience-with-the-09G-Transmission

    have you the same transmission?

I don't. Mine is the 7 speed dry clutch DSG, which to be honest is a bit of a disappointment in the gear-change quality stakes. It's a bit jerky and slippy/revvy at times. I thought they were supposed to be silky smooth with seamless gear-changes. It's going in on Friday to get the oil replaced under the VAG recall. I'll see what it's like after that and if I'm not happy they can sort it out while it's still under warranty:pac:

I got the gearbox oil change done today. Only had a short time to try it out but it's much better. Changes are seamless I have to look at the dash display to see what gear it's in. Btw its a Skoda Octavia not a vw.
