The close relationship between James Joyce and music has long been recognized by his readers, critics, and biographers. Joyce, like his father, was both an excellent singer (with a sweet tenor voice) and an accomplished pianist with an encyclopedic mastery of music of every type and genre, rivaling his vast knowledge of world literature. As a writer, he nevertheless incorporated music into all his works in increasingly complex ways, especially in Chamber Music, Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist, Ulysses, and Finnegans Wake.

So please post here James Joyce's favourite music.

If he had not become a writer, there is a very good chance that James Joyce would still have made a name for himself by pursuing a career as a vocal performer. In 1904 he even shared the stage with the great opera singer and recital artist, John McCormack; and later on in life, after he had established himself as an author, he tirelessly promoted the singing career of his fellow Irishman and tenor, John Sullivan.

He scraped a living reviewing books, teaching and singing—he was an accomplished tenor, and won the bronze medal in the 1904 Feis Ceoil.

Joyce was an accomplished tenor.
The coolest piece music I associate with him is that weird piece of musical notation that pops out of the blue in Finnegans Wake.

Also the tunes from 'The Dead'.Starting singing them in my head whilst reading(Which was more than like de desired effect)

I heard Frank Harte singing The Brown and the Yellow Ale some years ago and he mentioned that it was one of Joyce's favourite folk songs, and a strange song it is too. Link to Luke Kelly's version

There are thousands of musical references and allusions scattered throughout Joyce's works, and it would require a monumental effort to catalog and treat them all in detail. As a group, however, their relevance covers virtually the entire James Joyce canon, in particular Ulysses, Dubliners, and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, but also including Chamber Music, Stephen Hero, and Finnegans Wake.

I look forward to the day when I meet someone in a Cafe who is listening on an I pod and says he/she is studying Literature and studying James Joyce and listening to the music that Joyce loved so well . My thoughts at that time at that stage would be that they are beginning to get a sense of what Joyce was about. So many Joycean students pay no attention to the music he loved so well, to them I say give up your study of Joyce "you are going nowhwhere without being interested in the songs he loved so well"
