Might just work in the Mid West USA, not in Cork city/county with a rabbit warren of side roads he can duck into.

Then you look at a map and set it up where his options are limited.

I heard it was lack of an NCT.
No, it was a stolen van that was involved in various other robberies

Man who drove stolen van at garda jailed for 12 years
Judge in Cork says John Paul O’Driscoll (27) guilty of ‘phenomenally dangerous driving’

A man who deliberately drove a stolen van while drunk at a motorcycle garda trying to divert traffic away from a garda pursuit has been jailed for 12 years for various offences.

John Paul O’Driscoll was guilty of “phenomenally dangerous driving” observed Judge Sean Ó Donnabháin as he imposed two consecutive terms totalling 12 years on O’Driscoll.

Judge Ó Donnabháin had been willing to suspend the final two years of the term but he rescinded it when O’ Driscoll shouted at him from the dock that he could “f*** off”.

No sympathy. The only thing is that POS got only 12 years. He has 168 previous convictions!!

About time he got a decent sentence, But no way in hell should someone be allowed accumulate that many prior convictions.

Heard on the radio the one Garda who stopped traffic on the mallow road, (and saved potentially the lives of those motorists) may never ride his motorcycle again and worse that he was a motorcycle enthusiast.

the man is a hero in my opinion and should be awarded something significant for what he did and went through.

No it won't this crim is obviously institutionalized and he never wants to be released.

He'll re-offend too with increasing ferocity to get even greater sentences. He's probably a big man inside and respected by fellow crims and screws alike.

    Eh, no.

Have you any idea of the conditions under which Gardai can fire at people? They can't just go around taking potshots at people - and if they did there'd be a scrum of people on here demanding their heads on plates for abusing their powers.

    FFS!

They can fire at a driver, or his vehicle, if his vehicle is being used as a weapon. The PSNI did this a few years ago killing a driver, and were cleared of any wrongdoing.

Those 2 guys are in their 30's, you would think that they would have more cop-on at this stage of their lives.
It could have been worse if it was not Good Friday and there was less traffic on the roads.

    What a naive post.

    Naïve?
    In what way?
They are in their 30's and should have more respect for other people, what is naïve about that?

They were in their 20's, and generally you could make the age point. But these two seem to be lower than low. You can't legislate for these people.

    Yes ye are right there
one 26 and one 27. I heard they were in their 30's?
Alcohol addiction probably but I would not accept that excuse either.

In point of fact it would be attempted manslaughter, unless you think the (apparently quite stupid) muppet responsible has been /planning/ to kill the Garda.

If you're going to continue to be alarmist, at least /try/ to be accurate. Or get a job with the Star, they'd love you.

There's no such thing as attempted manslaughter.

Should have been attempted murder, or a combination of assault with intent to endanger life (max. life) and dangerous driving (Max. 14 years). Although that said, 12 years is more than I would have expected our dubious justice system to dole out.
