We're a couple (one from Dublin, one from Canada) thinking about making the move to Cork for a quieter but still lively lifestyle. We love Dublin but getting sick of entitlement and angry people.
One of us will be working from Cork city and one of us from home, and we would like to be outside the city.
We were looking at Cobh (yes yes we've seen all the negative stuff about litter problems, but we visited and loved the place) but would like some suggestions.
Any ideas? Likes and dislikes? Places to definitely avoid?
    Thanks :)

Will the person working in the city centre be driving in or could they get the train?
I would suggest looking at carrigtowhil or Midleton.

Midleton has restaurants pubs and a hotel etc so if you don't want to go into the city to socialise no need to. Train station

I wouldn't choose Cobh, as the roads are pretty bad from City to Cobh (unless you really don't care about the car)
Douglas would be nice too, Midleton (maybe too far?), or Ballincollig?

Middleton is roughly the same amount of minutes as cobh from the city due to better roads, maybe even closer depending on where you live in either town.
As for cobh, i wouldnt live there myself. Its an island with a bridge linking it to the "mainland". If anything were to happen to the bridge then the cross river ferry is gonna be busy. I know its a pretty minor possibility but ive always wondered about what would happen if it got damaged. Even a truck breaking down on it would cause havoc.
The place is also very hilly, couple that with another bad winter and it makes driving anywhere impossible. Again thats dependant on where in cobh you live.
On the plus side its a pretty town, and a nice place to be in the summer. Its close to everything and has wonderfull beaches within 20mins drive.
    Still not for me tho.

I've checked out some of these other places you guess mentioned, looks nice!
Any of them are on a similar train service? While he'd be driving into work, when I'd go into town it would likely be transport.

Strangely Cobh doesnt have a bus service to the city, just the train but that stops a good 10 min walk from the city centre shopping areas.
The other areas in east cork like middleton and carrigtwohill have busses but i dont know how good the service is. The bus station is only a 2min walk from the main shops.

Mallow? Very good bus and rail links to the city. Good sized town with lots of clubs etc. very accessible to the countryside,

Kinsale, Crosshaven, Bandon is nice too. You will need a second car.
