Have bought and sold on done deal. When buying you have to go with your gut.
if ya feel the cattle are too dear just walk away. Always have to remember you are saving the seller a day in the mart, transport and selling costs too.
if he is serious about selling at a realistic price, he wont let you leave the yard.
price should leave both parties happy.

only time i got caught was when cards weren't signed and had more movements than i thought when they came into the agfood account.

can be a very good way of picking up cattle though.
Most frustrating thing is driving a good distance after asking questions on phone and all answers were what ya wanted only to be told on arrival a different story (eg. I checked the cards since and some of the cattle are 6 months older than i thought
    Or
i checked the cards and they are hex but its not on the card)

How do u know how many movments an animal has when ur buying at the mart.do u know before u start bidding?

At marts I go to, it shows up somewhere after the seller's name, usually in brackets; e.g. (QA 2 179) meaning 2 owners, in the present owner's herd 179 days. Not sure though if an animal brought to a mart, unsold and brought home again sometimes counts as a movement on the Board.

Any mart I was in it was just the number of owners it was, have tried selling animals a few times and nothing changed on board only more days

I buy a good amount of cattle off done deal but I insist that there weighed through a mart and preferably paperwork done through the mart office as well

Would many people decide not to sell that way ? The bonus I would see in selling private would be to avoid bringing them to the mart

Only ever had one man refuse to do it that way, still bought most of his stock 20/30 cheaper through the ring than what I'd have offered him at home. I think it's wasting their day in the mart most farmers don't like, most of them are happy enough to do it and pay the mart a few pound for the use of their facilities. The farmers guaranteed his money that way too, safer than taking a cheque off a stranger! Well that's how I see it anyway.

Price agreed before in this, only going through mart for weight and movement I presume

Not much advantage in buying off DD to then pay same mart fees and transport costs. Other issue is it is still costing you as much time. I usuall find that in a mart that you can target your comming and going time. A phone call in the morning will tell you usuall waht time particulaar stock arrive at, Cows, heifers, bulls, bullocks, or calves. Usually if buying 2-3 hours will see you through the section you want. Also weight at mart can favour seller as he gets fresh weight, this could account for 20-30kgs/head.

Most farmers that I see that want to sell by weight want top mart price accross the whole bunch they have. Mind you not that I am the greates judge of weight but the saving in transport and mart fees. In reality as a buyer you may visit 3-4 lots before you buy a suitable lot so the buyer is not saving a lot of time

You can convince yourself of anything if you stay at it long enough. It doesn't mean you're right though.
