I've got a fillet of ham and the instructions say:

Place in cold water, bring to boil. Simmer for 30 minutes. Pour off water and replace with fresh water and bring to boil.

"When boiling, reduce heat and simmer for 45 minutes per kg plus 20 minutes extra at the end."

My question is whether the first 30 minutes counts towards this calculation? Does "when boiling" cover all boiling from the beginning or just after the first 30 minutes...

    So a 500g piece - takes 42.5 minutes or 72.5 minutes?

    Thanks!

Edit- piece is 1kg not 500g

Usually around a hour and half.

Can I suggest using something other than water? I use Coke Cola or Cider, I find they give the ham a slightly sweeter and juicer taste. It's your Ham though ;-)

I'd read that as calculating the timing after the first 30 minutes - ie 72 mind

    Thanks guys.

Actually it's 1kg so I'm assuming an hour and a half....

When I cook ham, I always rinse it under a cold tap for a few minutes.

Then cover it in cold water, and bring it to the boil. Once at the boil, remove any scum that has risen to the top.

Then I boil it for 20 minutes per pound (454g).

So your ham, I'd only boil it for just under an hour.

Then, I'd glaze it and bake it for 15 minutes as well.

So 1hr 15mins including baking? I can't bake today but cheers for tip.

Is everyone agreed that if boiling a 1kg piece it's 1.5hrs total? :)

It would certainly be cooked at that point. Like I say, I wouldn't cook it for that long but it would be ready to eat for sure.
