Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Wonder will any of this be reflected in the UKIP's result, wild guess ~ maybe 25-30% in the next main uk election...

I guess the Scots feared a blank page of fear to the terrible but at least guaranteed current fear.

Indeed, basic psych boils down to two simple things, either:

    - To seek pleasure
    - To avoid pain

Hang on, I thought the Yes campaign was meant to be a grass roots movement not dominated by the SNP. Thats what people were told before the vote, now they are giving credit to the SNP? Have a cake and eat it?

1,220,000 votes to be counted, Yes would need a vast majority of those to pass.

Better the Devil you know than jumping into the unknown. The No campaign of fear worked to a tee. Oh Scotland, you've lost your chance of creating something special.

Obviously enough people feel they are doing well enough not to change things.

That was their choice, I guess we won't know now for a long time if they would have been better off in an independent Scotland or sticking with what they have.

There'll be some anger about when the promised powers don't materialise!
Politicians don't have a good record of delivering on promises.

Would you have said the same if the results were reversed? The generality of Scottish people have rejected independence and want to remain part of the UK and I don't see why a lot of people on here seem so sad about that fact.

That's a thumping win for the no side, more than enough to cancel out the Glasgow vote, it's turning into a convincing margin, it looks like the "silent majority" actually did exist contrary to what the yes side would have told you.

    Irrelevant?

Sarcasm aside, it's probably a yes.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,017 ✭✭✭SharpshooterTom

No worries, its projected to be 53% NO from the count there.

Means final result will finish around 44.7%/55.3%

Good result/bad result for YES? Sarcastic answers I know they've lost but is it something they can build on, will that be enough for a second referendum 15-20 years again from now?

The irony is that with all the talk of the risks Scotland would face as an independent nation including being outside the EU etc, Scotland could find itself forced out of the EU in a couple of years time by English voters. Very few nations get the opportunity to become independent peacefully, fewer still reject that chance. Scotland has joined a very exclusive club. In 1995 Quebec rejected independence on the back of last minute Canadian government promises of greater autonomy....they're still waiting. In fact in 1999 the Canadian government introduced legislation that makes any future referendum almost impossible.

The result is very clear, I just hope Scots don't regret their choice.

That's interesting because the Highlands is a mainly SNP area.

As for what happens next, the last referendum was in the late 70's wasn't it? This should be it for independance for another 30 years at least plus if there are no more discoveries of oil in the North Sea then the economic argument will get even more difficult for the yes side.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,781 ✭✭✭clappyhappy

Delighted with the result, but those that voted Yes have to be listened to also.

This is misleading though.... Scotland voluntarily entered into the Union in the early 18th Century and has never expressed a particular desire to end that Union up until the last couple of months.

    Scotland isn't a colony. It wasn't invaded.

Scotland can become independent whenever it wants to.

No it can't. Any future referendum would require the consent of the UK government just like this one required consent from Westminster.
