Headset adapters

Looking to get a headset for my son and he has put his eye on a Turtle Beach one. I know I have to get an adapter to connect it all up. How do these connect up.? I was told that the hdmi cable goes into it, is that the case? I presume these headsets have speaker and mic jacks on them to connect to the adapter?
