Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

My dad had one of these in the mid 90s.

    It did 85-90mpg easy peasy.

You'd need a calender for the 0-60 time though. :pac:

Mad asking price though. More dreamer then bangernomics but I have a serious soft spot for these.

Small 3cyl diesels are sooo "in" this season. This is like a BMW for hipsters. :pac:

    That's cool.
Ancient diesel tech, could probably run on the sniff of anythin' flammable.

Definitely capable of more. Voice of experience here.

Maybe my dad just drove like an aul one. :pac:

Oh i'd say you could see mid 70's anyway, but i'd imagine it's borderline incompetent for modern day traffic :P

I dunno, with 50 BHP or so would it be all that bad? It's so shít it's cool, like an automatic Hillman Hunter. :D

People say that ancient diesels are incompetent for modern day traffic. I've been doing 120k per day for the past 3 months in a 57 bhp 1.8d ford fiesta. Nay a bother keeping up with traffic and doing 55 mpg to boot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,704 ✭✭✭Cheensbo

I'd imagine the charade would be a fair shot bit quicker than my 90-odd-bhp 2 tonne pajero, so definitely no troubles in traffic, the only problem with it is the dreaming asking price, it is sh1t cool though

    except for...
Just back from a trip to wicklow.
Drove down in my fiesta, arrived back on an AA truck.
The fiesta burst a radiator hose.

    1990 Daihatsu to buy: €1800
    Tax €200
    10,000 miles @ 75mpg, (diesel @ 1.38) €826
    year 1 ownership €2826

    1999 Micra 1.0 petrol to buy €800
    Tax €200
    10,000 miles @ 40mpg, (petrol @1.48) €1680
    year 1 ownership €2680

So the Micra is €1k cheaper to buy, but uses €850 a year more in fuel, so somewhere in year 3 you will start saving buying the Daihatsu.
I’d have the Micra for the sake of a few mod cons, safety, simplicity of mechanicals and parts availability, plus you won’t look destitute (if that’s a problem for you).

Ah but that was my own chance after a "<racism removed by moderator> fix" turned out to only last 100 miles. My own fault not the car's - all it needs is a new rad hose.

Who's comparing it to a micra? I was driving a fiesta and now changed to my new bangernomics TDI golf.
And I wouldnt care about looking destitute. My days of auto willy-waving are behind me. I ain't 17 no more!

i was comparing it to a micra as generally if someone comes on here looking to drive a car on as little money as possible, the k11 micra gets recommended. i was trying to highlight that the lay man would assume that this daihatsu would be super cheap to run, but it is actually somewhat more expensive than a micra.

i too don't care about looking destitute, but it is often mentioned in this thread that one of the best bits of bangernomics is driving a car that looks much more expensive than it actually was. the daihatsu is the opposite, it was more expensive than it actually looks.

Interesting. The OH has a k11 micra and on the same route as my fiesta it barely even hits 40mpg - the fiesta does 55+.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

well that makes sense, you'd expect that of both cars. the micra should do 40ish mpg at a steady 60-65mph unless there is something wrong with it. and instead of saying 55+ mpg in the fiesta, why don't you say 60- :P

i had a focus with the 1.8 tddi engine, 80bhp or something, it was handy enough on fuel. it was definitely slow as ****, but the torque made it bearable.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,190 ✭✭✭Mister Jingles

As a k11 micra owner I can say that they are indeed a bollocks on fuel, especially after 90kph. With the colder weather in now I've noticed it been worse on fuel but that's is understandable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,532 ✭✭✭JohnBoy26

Those charades are excellent on fuel and they are very well built. They also have fully independent suspension and feel more planted on the road compared to newer competitors such as the micra and mk1 sirion. They are slow to get going though but once up to speed they will happily cruise along, over taking wouldn't be their strongest point however.

The cylinder heads are also prone to cracking on them, especially turbo variants. It's something that is a must to check upon inspection as parts are very difficult to find for these at this stage.

As for a Micra, in my experience they are not great on fuel for a small car, but they are grand car otherwise. Not sure I'd opt for one of these either though if safety was a priority. AFAIK they didn't fair too well in the euro ncap. :)

that's like a Clarkson Top Gear ending...

"which one should you actually buy, well, neither! and on that bombshell, goodnight!"

i'm not gone on the charade anyhow, a gtti maybe, but a tddi :pac:

The only reason I would ever buy an old style Micra would be to deliberately crash it and rid the world of one miserable sh*tebox.

Pre face lift alfa with an 06 reg? It's quite a bit older than the reg says.

Discussed that on the "Today I saw a..." thread last week, trying to figure how a pre facelift 156 could survive unreg'd until 2006.

A what now? A venturi is by definition a restriction,
A venturi is a narrowing that forces whatever's passing through it to go faster. When a river narrows the water flows faster - same principal with air.

Because usually it's approx 55, like the last tank was 55.3 for instance (yes I measure each tank brim to brim)

Only one thing would put most off that Corolla is the tax at €710 is extortionate for that vehicle.
JDM with plenty of spec compared to most Irish cars of that era and later.
I'd have no problem driving it.

nothing too special about this, just a nice looking car for not much money if you need a good diesel.

If you have a clatter of kids to haul around, this aint bad.

NCT till end of june 2015, 3 months warranty and not a bad colour. €900 should do it.

Silly typo error especially considering its a dealer thats selling...

    he's talking like it's a WRX or STi model, it's a ****ing stock 1.6.

don't get me wrong, it looks clean and tidy and could be a sound purchase all the same.

i wonder will they ever be as cult as the mk1 and 2? will a day come in 30-40 years time where we wish we filled our back yards with these.

i know the mk1 focus is a far better car, but in the mid 90's the escort was probably a reasonably good looking car even if the interior is a bit dire, i mean it probably looks no more/ less dated, even now than a 98/99 corolla.

The Impreza sure looks like a decent well kept car. Nice long NCT. That said, it's only 2WD, innit? And the 1.6 is very slow. Not that good a bargain for a 17 year old car with little to say for itself.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,569 ✭✭✭Special Circumstances

Well minded and reliable I'd say but - slowish, thirsty and probably difficult to insure. At that price he needs to be hoping for some ice and snow I think. Assuming it's AWD, although 1.6 could be FWD and the seller has completely neglected to specify. (Why would you buy a FWD impreza???)

EDIT - NCT details suggest FWD. OR yet again the NCT hoonigans have been putting AWDs on the rollers for the lolz.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

if it was an AWD model, i'm sure that particular seller would have thrown it in.

For me, it would be like saying "includes steering wheel".
You kinda assume some things, unless someone specifically says otherwise!

  • Registered Users Posts: 703 ✭✭✭Honey Monster

I owned one of those 1.6 Imprezas and I wouldn't call them "slow"...they're a a 1.6 and behave like one if not the quicker end of one. They're not bad. It's not a bargain though.

i see your point, but it's a very basic looking car overall. clean, but basic. i doubt they went for hub caps but ticked yes for 4wd. i could well be wrong though.

    True.

Following some lightning research, I think that model was 1.6 fwd only, but later models you had a choice.

    Next banger!
