Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    not a BMW :pac:

Obviously not. A BMW would never make it to 1,450,000 miles :p

Too much of an association with skangermobiles round here to consider one.

Buy it for €600, sell it next May for €400

Almost a free car - spend €100 on insurance (classic) and a bit on petrol

And these are nice to drive too :)

    True.

Following some lightning research, I think that model was 1.6 fwd only, but later models you had a choice.

    Next banger!

Yep, that 1.6 Subaru Impreza is FWD only. Not a bad car .. and looks very straight and because its only FWD its actually a bit quicker than you might imagine. AWD requires more engine power and makes the car heavier, which probably explains why that 1.6 model was FWD only. All Impreza's are pretty decent to drive because the center of gravity of the Subaru boxer engine is lower to the ground than conventional engines, which means the whole car handles a bit better.. better handling gives you more confidence to it give more 'beans' .. or so the theory goes :-)

This is a sweet motor for €1,500

1.4 K-series Honda-Rover engine was very quick and very reliable. 105bhp I think .. I owned an old Rover 214-16v myself back in the 90's and it was a hoot.

Looks good as a Saloon and I love the 'fish gills' on the front fenders, beautiful interior too for such pitiful money.

    http://www.adverts.ie/car/mg/zs/2005-mg-zs-for-sale/6811399

    6811399

    Car : MG Zs
    Year : 2005
    Body Type: Saloon
    Fuel Type: Petrol
    Engine Size: 1.4L
    Colour: Black
    Mileage: 102,680 Kms
    Transmission: Manual
    Tax: No
    NCT: Until Dec 2015

Only downside I can see .. is you would want to see a Service history to validate that mileage and I'd carefully inspect the back bumper as it does not appear to be on 100% correctly and he mentions exhaust repairs... definitely worth having a closer look at.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

i don't think Honda had any input on the K-Series, it is a nice engine though and that's a nice car, probably one of the nicest small family cars for that kind of money.

i believe head gaskets were upgraded for facelifted cars, so it may not need attention. if they are anything like ZR's, they are fond of exhaust back boxes, thankfully they are cheap to replace. you are right on saying the back bumper looks to be hanging off a bit but any MG's of that area i've seen, the panel gaps have been pretty inconsistent on.

unfortunately from reading between the sellers lines, it has no test, but he will put it through for an extra €250, so one for the fixer-upper thread for the time being?

None that I know of. I know BL started work on variable valve technology in the 70's in the Sprite but abandoned it due to complexity.

An example of talking one's self out of a sale. Sounds like he reckons the car needs more than €400 worth of work for a new test and is chancing his arm by 'splitting' the cost. I dont understand. Just get the car tested and then take it from there.

Hertz rented me one of those a few years ago out of Dublin Airport. Had it for a week and I loved it. Interior is a bit cheap though, but it went well and was fun to drive. Should be cheap enough to run.

Only downside is mileage is a bit high and that self same electric folding hood would want to be working flawlessly.

Seriously doubt you could sell that for 4k in a matter of 7 months.
The engine would want to be something better than a 1.4.

Don't think it qualifies as a Bangernomic as its over the €2000 budget.

but it is a savage deal .. they are a beautiful car and that 2.4 5 cylinder diesel engine is a peach. That mileage shouldn't be a problem for it either. Its the other bits you would have to worry about, electrics, suspension, exhaust system, brakes etc. Volvo are expensive when stuff goes wrong .. Road tax is high too €1080 / year.

If you look back over the last couple of pages, neigh past few months you will see many many cars listed of the 2k budget.
There is a very slight room for haggling in that sale and even if the seller didn't budge that is a bargain.
I remember once I asked whether there should be a thread dealing with this sort of price range and tbh it didn't take off.
You must also consider the fact it still has some tax on it plus a long NCT. Well worthy of this thread IMO.

Fair point, and that would be an issue if you were buying it to keep it yourself... a bit more poke would be an essential. But buying it to flog it on .. the small engine actually makes it more desirable.

The buyer for that car is a young-ish woman who doesn't care what engine its got....all she is interested in is how it looks ? If anything the small engine makes it better for re-sale.

Biggest problem it has is the mileage and maybe the colour. Black is a bit dull for a small open top car.

Seriously if it was located a bit closer to me .. I'd take a punt on it myself.

I bet there is less scrupulous people than me thinking to themselves .. if that car had 'half' the mileage (wink, wink) and was maybe silver or red .. it would be going for €5k

Far better value than the V70 listed above. Belt done and service history. The V70 has neither mentioned in the ad.
As with all s60's you need to test the cruise control on a test drive. The control module is €900 to replace and throws up a warning light when starting off on your journey, which goes out -I think it says something about a service. Anyway, its an NCT fail.

Edit: its an ABS control module

Not worth a whole lot more tbh. At the end of the day it's a glorafied Corsa C which imo wasn't what you would call a great car to begin with

    Again good point.

But you won't buy an 07 Corsa for €2k and I assure you this is a more valuable car than a standard Corsa. Anyway .. I'd say it will be sold this weekend .. and somebody will make a killing on it next summer.

I know it is not bangernomics yet but this car was on sale for 3950 a month and a bit ago. I have been watching keenly and after she drops next time I plan to take a look. I think that this would be serious bangernomics if she could be got for €2000.

Looks great. If the seller thinks he can get more than €2k, he's still dreaming though. I reckon he would take €2k so yes, it deserves a place in here :)

Sludgy sludgy though, and 130k miles. Bit of a gamble without a lot of service history over the last few years. Even then...

    Heres an equation or 2

Small car, big / powerful engine = savage performance
Big car, big engine = quick car

Big car, big engine + auto = pedestrian performance

The 93 Aeros go like stink and grip the road like a rally car. This 95 wagon - what is the point? Its not a racer, prob goes well, but an aero with automatic gear box???

You quoted my post about a renault laguna. I think however you are referring to the SAAB 9-5 I posted earlier. You are free to dislike the car if you choose but I think it looks very clean, has 250bhp, more extras than I can mention and is getable for about €2,000.

I certainly like the 9-3 aero but there arent many good ones around. If you come across them post them up. I cant find one for sale anywhere in Ireland at the minute which meet the criteria for this thread.

Also, If someone needs an estate, then the 9-5 is a serious contender and the 9-5 has a higher spec than the 9-3 and most other cars.

You misunderstand Saab drivers. Some people just want a big, comfy cruiser and if it's an estate, it's an added bonus.
No one, but no one will buy that car and say down the pub "The 93 Aeros go like stink and grip the road like a rally car".
You did get one thing right. it's not a racer.
No. it's not. it's a Saab estate. How often have you heard people say "Look at that bloody maniac in his Saab!"?

Yeah I was referring to the 2.3litre Saab 95. Just dont see the point of a huge car with a "Sports" set up like the Aero. Buy a sports car with a good power to weight ratio. Or buy a lugger.

I dont know your financial means but you sound well off. Not everyone can have more than one car so if you need an estate but want something with some pep people get the subaru legacy estate, the aero saab 9-5 estate ...
