Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

That A6 offers serious value if it checks out mechanically. Proper economy and a lot classier than the A4 or (*shudders*) a passat.

I wouldnt know enough about cars to check it mechanically, I'd easily end up with a dud :pac:

    Prelude

What are they like to drive? I'd say they eat petrol.

My father had two, a 1990 with 4 wheel steering that he reckoned was the best car he ever drove. In 5 years had no problems( longest he ever held a car). Wasnt as happy with the 95 VTEC that he replaced it with. Car was reliable, but didnt feel as quick.
Cant comment directly about that model, but they were all well made. You wont get a prettier coupe for that money. Expect late 20;s MPG on average.

that models autoboxes have a bad reputation for reliability.. better of getting a 2.2 vti or a jap Sir imho

Would agree there. Nice to drive but compared to the earlier model I felt it just lacked a bit of the fun element. A manual is still the better choice. ;)

yep manual all the way in hondas;)

had a 93 BB4( lighter non 4wheel steering model) jap Si model with the 2.2 dohc vtec 193bhp , manual box too my favourite of any hondas Ive owned- the torque is immense for a Vtec and after 5500rpm the engine hums like a F1 car:cool:

available for under 1 k these days with nct if your willing to wait for the right car:)-

That seems to be a fairly high enough spec for a 1.4 Fabia - electric windows all round and from what I can make out it also has aircon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,478 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Heated seats as well I think

    Its UK Comfort spec
Right hand button under the heater knobs is indeed aircon

    They are heated seats!
I get the impression the seller isn't really familiar with the spec, could easily ask for a bit more.
Try and find another 1.4 Fabia with elec windows all round, aircon and heated seats.
    Really good find there Colm.

The engine is atrocious though and prone to being rather soft in my experience.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,478 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

The 16v or 3 cylinder alternatives arent much good either.
Can't go far wrong at this price though.

    I'll get my coat.

Newer models start to get foxy,

Will you grab my coat while you're at it....

In relation to the Fabias, the 1.4 MPI 8v was not likely to get you a speeding ticket on the motorway but did keep it's own in comparison to Yarises and the like. Had one for 6 years and it did me alright, one thing I would say though is watch the coolant levels, tended to drink the water a bit.

I would like you to cite a few reputable sites that substantiate your bad opinion of the Hondamatic gearbox of that generation.

Hearsay, or even your mate's bad experience will not cut the mustard...

No he's right they are troublesome, the autobox on that era accord is too.

    From honestjohn.

I like HJ reviews. However, they are usually slagged off here...

I have to say I have not read anything negative about Hondamatic boxes of that era before.

I can't understand why people take pictures of the interior of their car from the outside.
    How lazy can you be?
That said, with tax/nct/new belt (I'd want proof) and tires then that car is for free.

I am suitably jealous. I plan to get a 9-5 at the end of the year all going well. Make sure she has the right crank case breather system and it might be worth dropping the sump to make sure it is clean.

    Well wear

    Thanks !
A sump drop is top of my list ..
Full Saab service history so that gives some peace of mind too.

@jharr100 - car is '04 so might well be corrected system from factory, so no sludge potential and no need to drop the sump. Ask on a Saab forum how you can find out for sure - probably based on the VIN.

And well wear, that looks like a keeper!

    Thanks Unkel,
I'll be grinning for a while I'd say!

I thought the 04 had sludge problem sorted alright.

    Car is an absolute minter.
Might even convert it to LPG it down the road..

LPG is a bit risky - risk of premature valve / valve seats wear on the aul slant engine - linky

If you don't do huge miles, you might get away with LPG for many years without issue though. I would again do a bit more research on that...

Would a valvecare/flashlube system stop this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 65,741 ✭✭✭✭unkel
    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

    Possibly, I'm no expert :)

Adds to installation, maintenance and running costs though. Probably depends on what mileage he does and how many years he wants to keep it going and how much he is willing to invest in the car. I'm of the school myself that if I'd buy a bangernomics car, I wouldn't want to spend more than the bare minimum to invest in it

Another issue for jharr100 to look into. Lots of homework at the start of this schoolyear :D

That's a nice rover. Do they suffer with head gaskets going on them though? It seems priced fairly low and I wouldn't call that huge mileage.

It does have the K series engine, HGF is a possibility alright. Coolant level is critical. You can fit an aftermarket temp sensor with display/alert for very early warning.
