Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

In terms of "a good car" they are one model too late.

The previous C and E classes were the last of the good mercs imo.

There seems to be a rolling 'they don't make them like they used to' nostalgia about mercs. Time was the w201 and w124 were the last of the good mercs even though the facelifted w124 suffered plenty rot. Now the w202 and w210 seem to have crept into the last of the good mercs, both again heavily prone to rot.
There's a similar thing with 'thats not a real alfa', used to be that you'd to go back to the 75 for a real one but now the Fiat Tipo derived models (145, 146, 147, 155, 156, gt, gtv and spider) seem to have gained some posthumous heritage and the not a real alfa being reserved for ones with a GM block.

Audi coupe. I actually like this. Except the wheels are hideous.

Volvo S80, looks like an honest ad..
Looks clean. claimed FSH, 6 months NCT, leather.
Should be able to get it for less than €1K.

Needs couple of bits so maybe should be in fixerupper thread?

Fixer upper tbh. Needs wing + drivers window for NCT

Plenty of '04 and '05 ones out there for only a few hundred more. I wouldn't buy a manual either. Winter's coming! Time to test the snow mode on the autobox :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,331 ✭✭✭toyotaavensis

Surely that dent on the wing wouldnt fail the NCT?

Nope but the drivers window does

    Here's one specially for you:

'04 Avensis Verso (7 seater), nearly 6 months NCT, asking €2k

    Got to link these images:

I have to say, I really like it. Some guy has spent tens, maybe hundreds of hours on this pride and joy, and although I suspect we have differing views of aesthetics, I respect the effort.

I'd wager that car is clean, and a quick LED removal, swap in some steel wheels and sell the rims (for half the cost of the car most likely!), and it'd be a good run about. Auto too, I bet it'll sell :)

Is it a March or a Micra though? Didn't electric windows only appear in Micras from 2000 onwards?

Tens, maybe. Hundreds -eh, no! :)

Also, in Bangernomical time, we don't even think about unsprung weight, never mind think about messing with it via steel wheels and all that (unless we have a set of steelies with good tyres out the back somewhere - or free from a mate who(se partner) wants them gone.

I thought, when I first saw the ad, that 'visible in the night' referred to the paint colour.. :pac: Internal blue lights (unless flashing) might not be illegal under the RTA but they should be, under common law. :) Rip them out (i.e. remove them very gently, with sensitivity), put it in D then drive on.

If I wanted a low tax, cheapish insurance (maybe not, because it is an import), automatic car, the ad would be marked 'Sold' already.

Seller can keep the lock, for an appropriate discount.

    Not your ornery onager

You could leave that open in any of the dodgier parts of any town in ireland with the keys in it, no one would steal it.
If they do, they would abandon it after 500 meters, which in a 1 liter auto Micra would take 10 minutes...

I hear you. Acording to fuelly they average about 35MPG with some averaging 40MPG. Not too bad really.

Depending on the nature of the bodywork needed this is excellent value. Cheap tax, low milage, 9 months NCT for €700

tis a bit dear at that imo. couldn't get that kind of money for my fresh test SXI spec diesel 2 years ago. 1500 seems right. they are a lovely car and that does look like a good spec and a tidy car but they appear to be worth sweet **** all.

How about a bangernomic mixed with a luxobarge?

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/mercedes-s320-2001/7673554

NCT 06/15! FSH, tax until the end of October and barely run in at that mileage.

Or is that engine a bit too small for you and not near enough toys? Then how about this monster with the same tax rate :D

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/mercedes-s500-lwb-full-spec/7340645

NCT 01/15, FSH and.. well the pictures speak for themselves.

So they are the same engine as the 9-5 and in fact wheeler dealers did one of these some years back and it had a failed turbo attributed to oil starvation (sludge).

That said if it runs alright and you are happy to drop the sump and give her a clean then it could be a good car but for not much more money you could get an example with leather and lower milage.

I had one of these ( non-turbo ) for a few years. Underpowered tight cars inside. Quite big when u factor in the bumpers etc. viewing obstructed due to moose proof front pillars.

A pig for petrol saying that I miss it some days......

Look for good service history, if you know anybody who has access to the saab/scania system they might be able to tell you if it was looked after.

Best mate had one as a bangernomics car also with the V6 Busso engine. Bought it for a bit over a grand with an LPG installation and sold it a year or two later for a bit under a grand when it was no longer economically viable to keep it on the road (needed belt / pump / tyres)

When he got rid, it had well over 300k km on it. Who says Alfa Romeos are unreliable? They just needed decent maintenance and will cost a bit more than other cars to keep right, but that's it really.
