Yeah if I was writing a seminar on spotting dodgy car ads that would be in my PowerPoint presentation.

Also, I see lady owner as a negative. I'd see it as the car will probably need a new clutch sometime soon :pac:

Never saw that episode. Were those lads flies, or even possibly pismires?

    Not your ornery onager

What do we think of this..

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/mercedes-e-200/7226665

Obviously if its not covered in rust it would do me nicely for 6 months or so. My old man also has one with 240k miles on it still pulling boats and doing 800 miles a week without any big problems

One of the most comfy cars on the road. For €750 or thereabouts I can think of a lot worse cars to spend the next 6 months in!

Nice. Drive it for 6 months and retest it or break it for close to what you paid for it.

    Be a lovely comfy cruiser.

I rang the chap there, he has poor english (not that that would put me off) but I'm finding it hard to get any answers to my questions. Saying that, it only passed the NCT on the 30/06 so it cant have deteriorated that much *crosses fingers.

The last thing I want is to sit on a bus for 6 hours and find that its a bit of a dog.

That would be my thinking. Surely you wouldn't care much if it has a few more dents / scratches than you were expecting?

If you can spare the time (don't have to take time out of work etc.), it's probably worth the risk going over

I'd chance it. It's a pretty low risk investment and if its all good you won't have to worry about catching a bus home. :)

Do your standard checks for any car(oil, weird noises, brakes etc) and thats good enough for me when its an 800 quid car imo.

    Astra Turbo

If it is still ok after 13 years and 125k miles, I'd say the car will probably be ok for another 6 months too :)

    Okay, I deserved that...:o
Genuine question - there's a ton of these knocking about, really tempted by E200 or VolvoS80 / V70 any likely/potential pitfalls?
My own current bangernomics is a <1k diesel octavia that was found here 2 yrs ago and is still going strong.
The next purchase is for the missus to bring the kids a few miles to school, she wants an auto with room for 3 child seats and doesn't want MPV or SUV. under 10k km a year I would guess so petrol/ diesel not really a major consideration.
[Sorry if I'm not allowed to ask a question in thread]

Small mileages don't suit diesels at all.
Better to get a petrol for school runs.

True for modern diesels but for the old stuff it does't really matter :)

I don't agree, even old diesels like a good run. diesels need a good few miles before they warm up enough to give heat and start to perform normally.
You'd be driving with no heater all the way there and back in winter.
    DAMHIK.

True but I don't think that harms them mechanically at all. Not pleasant for the occupants though!!!

S80 probably more reliable / less to go wrong and driven like miss daisy all its life :D Pick up an '02 or '03 for about a grand. 5 pot turbo 180BHP, that's quite a bit of poke for your 2l tax

Personally, I'd be tempted by the comfort of the W210 though...

2.8 on the add, 2 on the books and 5.4 on the car.

At the upper end of the scale we have these:

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/vw-bora-tdi-6-speed/7833743

    NCT 01/15

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/mercedes-benz-c-class-c220-cdi-automati/7833516

    NCT 06/15

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/hyundai-sante-fe/7511970

    NCT 07/15

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/05-kia-sorento-quick-sale/7832057

NCT 02/15 - I'd say you could get this for just about bangernomic money

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/citroen-c5-1-6-hdi-110-sx-kph/7831437

NCT 02/15 the bodywork is a bit rough but those seats are very comfortable and the inside seems ok.

This yoke looks absolutely spotless! Dull as a rainy day but for the family man it's a good find. Decent spec as well.
    NCT 07/15.

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/renault-vel-statis/7792904

Lets see, what do we have here:

    Tax - Check 11/14
    NCT - Check 07/15
Full heated leather interior - Check
Ugly - Check but I'd still drive it

The 2 litre M52 engine was also 6 pot was it not?
So it could be a legit transplant.
Perhaps seller has certification seeing as it corresponds on the various websites etc:

It was but I would say it's more lightly to be a 2.0;) than a 2.0.

I've been wrong before though! Someone will have to contact the seller to know for sure.

The 2.0 was a 6 cylinder alright but I can't see why anyone would transplant a 2.0 producing 150 into a car like that which originally came with a 192hp 2.8, I'd say it's a dodgy tax book jobbie.

I drove one of them for a couple of weeks in France a few years back. The weird looks actually grow on you, and it was a mighty yoke on l'Autoroute. 2l turbo with six-speed 'box back in 2004, plenty long-legged stomp bah!

And the 2.8 was underpowered enough as it was for the E38

E38 without V8, you might as well have no E38 at all :)

But not in Ireland, we love big cars, with tiny, wheezy engines.
I know a guy who had a 1970's 380 SEL and put a 3 liter diesel from a W123 300D into it. Jesus wept. He's driving around in it, saying "Jaysus, she's grate! Just the same as before and she'll do 40 to the gallon!"
These people miss the point by so much, they can't even see it anymore.

I had to take a lot of taxis for work in the mid 90s and half the time I got an old S-class with a Nissan diesel in it. Didn't complain though, plenty of space in the back and far more comfy than a 1.3 Toyota Corolla, especially at 4.45AM on a Monday morning :D

I agree that you need a V8 at least in the 7er but the 2.8 is no real slouch, if I remember a video of VoodooMelon's he clocked 8 seconds to 60.

Missing 2 cylinders and a bit optimistic with asking price, but looks extremely clean.
