Pros/cons of a Sole Trader sideline?

    Hi,
I'm lucky enough to be in full-time employment. I've been doing some free graphic design work for various voluntary groups as a sideline, and now other people are coming to me looking to get jobs done.
If I'm to start charging for my time, I want to do it legitimately.
What's the story with setting up a small sole trader sideline in terms of tax? How do you separate it out (I can't see the sideline income amounting to much, maybe a couple of grand a year) and what are the potential pros/cons?
    Thanks.
