just wondering how common this is and can vets test a dog for it , my girlfriend claims she has scabies and suspects my dog may be the one who infected her

Yes, the vet can do a gentle "skin scrape" with a scalpel during the vet visit, to check for the presence of mites under the microscope.

is it then treatable ? , the dog is fairly old but he is well looked after

Yes, the vet can do a gentle "skin scrape" of the skin surface with the edge of a scalpel blade. This debris is then transferred onto a slide to check for the presence of mites under the microscope. Yep it's common, and easily (and cheaply) treated.

Very easily treated, OP, under the direction of your vet. He/she would need to see the dog to diagnose mange and rule out any other skin conditions.
