Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Anyone know where this is mentioned in the law? Is there an exemption for vintage? There's a fairly solid one on the 35, but it's awkward and unsightly and I'd like to take it off.

Where-upon the Gards will take a dim view and summons you. From bitter experience. :)

Yeah, that's why I was looking for the legislation in relation to it.

According to the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport (Deputy Leo Varadkar) in the Oireachtas on Thursday, 17 October 2013:
It is important to address any perception that there are no safety standards in place for vintage tractors. On the contrary, the Road Traffic (Construction, Equipment and Use of Vehicles) (Amendment) (No. 2) Regulations 1969 require all tractors used in a public place, irrespective of age, to have roll-over protective structures of an appropriate standard fitted.

    Here's the legislation:
S.I. No. 138/1969 - Road Traffic (Construction, Equipment and Use of Vehicles) (Amendment) (No. 2) Regulations, 1969

Handiest way to find out is to go for a spin without one and see what section they summons/fine you under. Or have the tractor roll-over on you and take the squish-test. Why not just build a better-looking roll-bar?

I notice that the legislation doesn't apply to pre-1970 tractors. Did he get it wrong about vintage tractors?

    (a) on and after the 1st September, 1970 to tractors which are registered on or after the 1st day of September, 1970, and

Edit: Doh! It wasn't Varadkar that got it wrong, it was me! Yup, applies to all tractors under 7 1/4 tons since sept 1977.

    Nope.

    Read on to paragraph (b):
    (b) on and after the 1st September, 1977 to every tractor.

The EXPLANATORY NOTE at the end explains:
The Regulations apply in two stages : — (a) initially to tractors registered for the first time on or after 1st September, 1970, and (b) as from 1st September, 1977 to older tractors.

Effectively, it required all new tractors from 1970 to have ROPS, and gave 7 years for older stuff to be retrofitted.

Thank you for your input, but the question was about the law, not the safety aspect of which I am well aware.
