Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hello all, Im a newbe to .22, 50m sporting target shooting up here in Donegal, but not new to shooting, any advice on what I should be concentrating on to get my groups smaller, or is it a case of everything from position to shot release and follow through. I'd be interested in your opinions

    Breathing and trigger pull.

Consistency in everything you do is the key.

trigger pull is definitely one I noticed, I'm going to get it lightened

Grip, hand position, head position, rest/bag position, as well as breathing and trigger pull (both in technique and weight).

As Blay said you want consistency and to add to that, repeatability. A process that you can instantly repeat to gain the same results. It should be your technique but one that works. It should be second nature to you.

Look into batches and batch testing. IOW find the ammo your gun likes and try to stick to that. This may require some testing but ammo is not dear.

Then it's a matter of putting some lead downrange. It's also very helpful to have an experienced shooter watch you. They will pick up on mistakes and notice things you may do that you do not realise you are doing.

I am working on the ammo, have tried a few brands through it, I have a Savage MkII BTVLSS , best results to date are with center X , I have a Nikon 6x24x50 fine crosshair scope mounted which I think is too high going to try lower mounts, and firing prone with target sling. I'm very interested in what you guys have to say and see what information I can pick up along the way

Am i right in thinking you are getting into Benchrest shooting. I only ask as i could be confusing what you are talking about with International Sporter class of BR?

Or is it a different type of rimfire shooting? Should have really asked this before i answered, but better late than never.

    • Trigger control.
    • Follow through.

If you're smooth and consistent on the trigger and you keep your head down until the shot's well gone you'll see your group sizes shrink.

You can spend a bunch of money on a better gun and/or better ammo but until you have the fundamentals right you'd be wasting money.

A €4,000 rifle is a starting point for IS benchrest 50m comp. shooting.
Believe me I've seen this rifle and it's would be hard to compete against it.

Is it benchrest 50m or 3 position ?

Either of these you need to be using a very very goid rifle, which type will determine the stock type and to get any good results u have to use target ammo, r50, centre x, eley match or tenex

no guys not bench rest shooting , I have a Savage varmint rifle, shooting at local range using target shooting jacket and single point sling, prone position no rests or support

It might be a bit of a stretch but have you considered trying any of the ISSF stuff with a target rifle and iron sights, given you're already shooting prone with a sling?

If you're in Donegal your nearest places to have a look would be in the north really. There's a club in Derry, or the one in Dungannon is very good, great facilities.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 882 ✭✭✭Wadi14

where is the one in Derry located?

Not sure to be honest, haven't been up there myself, but if you give the NISSU a shout they might be able to direct you to it. Their website is still not completely functional (Not all links and such working) but if you ask on the forum you should get some contact information.

How many find it handy to live in the RoI and be a member of a gun club in UK?

I know that following issues in our pistol licensing that there were certainly some doing so, but I'm not sure how easy it was, or what hoops needed to be jumped through or accommodations reached. Come to think of it though, I can think of some rifle shooters who've also done it, so it can't be too bad.

I know there is a form that can be got from the PSNI for permission to carry your rifle and ammo in the north

Would the OP not also have to be a member of a gun club in the Republic?

One would presume that he already is, given the type of shooting he's currently doing.

(In which case he simply applies for a visitor's permit each year and then comes and goes as he pleases)

[red face] Huh, missed that one somehow. So the visitor's permit is not just a one-time authorisation? Rather like an EU firearms license?

    Not a problem then.

    Easily done.

Technically it's issued for a single purpose like a specific visit or transit but every one I've seen has been for a year from the date of issue.

I think the ones from mainland GB are the same. I had a Surrey district one that lasted a year too. Only ones different have been Manx ones, which only last the duration of the stay.
