I want to buy a welder. Where should I go?

MIG Welder and have a budget of €1200.

I have been told to stay away from GIANT, Sealey and Esab.......

    Anybody recommend a good make?

Any on-line shops or somewhere local? In Cork

If I were buying a brand new 1 phase mig with your budget then I would go to this crew.
    http://www.weldequip.com/portamig-mig-welders.htm

Either the 215A or the 235A

You would still have change from your €1200 after stg ex and carriage.

Its 2nd hand value would be good too.

I used Miller and Lincoln mig welders when getting my codes.

Fairly bullet proof considering they had a constant stream of students messing with them day in day out. Price my be an issue though.

I worked for the railway at the time and we used a Lincoln and an esab. Esab was temperamental . The Lincoln was very reliable and was being used to build bridges.

How much and what type of stuff will you be welding with the machine?
I ask because generally speaking single phase mig welders are not all that good really.

    Very misleading statement ^ there.

No problem with 1ph machines at all. Obviously, if the op wants to weld thick material he may well need a higher rated dedicated socket.
I've seen up to 300amp 1ph plants pour down welds with 1.0mm wire on 12mm +... steel.

If the op is welding very light stuff like car bodies, the important thing to consider is how low can the machines amps go. That's why I linked the Portamig as they go down to 15 amps (using .6mm wire)

    Hi Op,
    Few points:
What is the welder being used for?
What amps are you aiming at?
Lincoln have a 3 year warranty on their machines, do the others?
