Just wondering where in the south east could we get a German shepherd pup. And has can anyone ever had one. We have a young family and would love a good quality dog for long term.

    Thanks in advance

If you were interested in a pup, I have a friend based in Co. Meath (Not the South East I know) who shows his Shepherds and I could ask him for details of someone. I don't believe he has any himself.

They would be the show type shepherd with the sloped back though.

I have one, a two year old intact male. Absolutely brilliant dog, rock solid temperament and loves children. My breeder hasn't bred a litter this year so I can't help you there. But if you're buying a pup do check out the parents and ask for hip scores. Aside from making sure parents are healthy and well bred dogs themselves, make sure they are sound and approachable dogs, there are WAY too many skittish GSDs being bred and it is not at all what the breed should be like. A nervous or fearful dog would be a red flag for me and I would avoid that litter.
Also, if you get the right pup, be prepared to put in a LOT of training and socialising (with care). They are great dogs, but they are 'land sharks' as puppies and nip and mouth like the dickens, you need to be aware of this if you have a young family, puppy teeth are very sharp.
They're very intelligent dogs so soild training is a must, and if you get one anything like mine yours will like a good routine, plenty of daily exercise (my own dog get a minimum of 2 hours a day) and they like to be with the family. I got my pup at 13 weeks and from that experience alone I would never again get one before 12 weeks, it's actually remarkable how much easier it was to house train and so on getting a slightly older pup. Best of luck.

I have 2 GSDs a 6 yr old female and 2 yr old male! they are quite simply the best dogs!! i will always have one!!
    Pretty solid advice from fatmammycat!!

My advice to you is to contact Kenneth Duggan, he is Secretary of the all ireland german shepherd association, his details are below:
    http://www.ikc.ie/all-ireland-german-shepherd-dog-assoc

He will put you on the right track and recommend any responsible breeders that may have pups at the moment

This is exactly how I feel about them. I've never owned a more affectionate, smart and just all round brilliant dog before. I know I'm probably biased, but they are just remarkable creatures. I wish I could clone my own dog.

I have worked with a few of them and they are such lovely dogs. I would be getting one this year if I felt my garden was secure enough, I don't think my five foot wall would be good enough lol.

Heh, no I don't think a 5 footer would stop them ;) * has watched own dog clear that without breaking stride*
