Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I'm surprised the Guardian are going so strongly with the story. Its the lead story on the website currently. It does seem like something that would have been seen as important in the aftermath of the fire (with regards to the investigation) if there was anything in it.

    1) May 1967: fire in Stafford Heginbotham’s factory at three-storey Cutler Heights Lane, Bradford
    2) April 1968: fire at Genefoam Ltd, managing director Stafford Heginbotham, Cutler Heights Lane
    3) August 1970: store-room explosion at Matgoods, founded by Heginbotham, in Wyke, Bradford
    4) December 1971: tenant fire at Castle Mills building, Cleckheaton, owned by Heginbotham
    5) August 1977: fire at Yorkshire Knitting Mills, in Heginbotham-owned Douglas Mills building, Bradford
    6) December 1977: fire at four-story Coronet Marketing factory, Leeds Road, Bradford. Coronet Marketing a subsidiary of Tebro Toys, owned by Heginbotham
    7) November 1977: fire with toxic fumes at Douglas Mills factory
    8) June 1981: fire in plastics factory at Heginbotham-owned Douglas Mills

While the figure of 9 fires sounds a lot on its own, is it a lot or the average amount when the number of businesses/premises hes involved with is taken in to account? 9 fires for a guy that owns 9 businesses would probably be a lot, but 9 fires for say, McDonalds, probably isnt.

    EDIT: just seeing JayKays list.

In number 3 , was he still involved at the time? If not then its only in there to bump numbers. Him founding a company that then goes on fire after he has left is irrelevant.
I assume number 4 is worded as a tenant fire because it was nothing to do with him either?

Most links seem fairly tenuous on the surface tbh.

You're hardly going to set it on fire during a match

The other question then is whether the owner was guilty of negligent manslaughter in not ensuring the stadium was fire-risk free. And the evidence seems to show that he was guilty of it - especially so if it has happened at other businesses.

As it is, he's dead now so no punishment can be dished out.

The Guardian are serialising the book today and tomorrow so vested interest in having it the main story.

The main suspect is long since dead, so no libel issues.

From that extract the data does seem to be cherry picked to support the argument Heginbotham was behind it so I'm not convinced, but even the thought that there could have been more to it still fascinates me.

If the book doesn't include statistics showing his fire rate to be anomalous from its general population then it won't have any credibility really and I reckon industrial fires and the likes were fairly frequent at that time.

    And the insinuation there is?

To be honest, I wouldn't bother addressing an absolute arsehole of a post such as that.

The judge who led the inquiry into the Bradford City football stadium fire has said claims it may have been started deliberately are "nonsense".

The retired judge said the main flaw in the argument that the fire was arson was the stand involved had no insurance value because it was due for demolition.

Read a few parts of it and the writer has done some homework on the chairman.

Its not too hard to believe.

He might not have thought it would get out of control so quickly and people would have had ample time to escape.

It would also be easier to throw people off the scent for the reasons you stated.

People take stupid risks when it comes to money.

Bumping this as today is the 30th Anniversary of this horrific event. What should have been a day of celebration turned to tragedy in under 5 minutes.

RIP to the 56 people who lost their lives.

BT Sport has a doc about his tonight which will have some new footage of what happened I think. I was listening to a clip of the local radio commentary on BBC radio this morning, you can hear the sense of panic building as it starts to become clear whats unfolding.

A day that those of us who were football fans in 1985 will never forget.

Shocking. We were playing in a football tournament in West Cork that day and came home to parents collecting us off the bus with news of the tragedy. The presence of cameras made it so very real, remember waiting for the headlines on RTE news later that night.

    It was shocking.

I think it often gets overlooked because Bradford is a small club and Hysel happened a few weeks later.

People under the illusion that football has somehow lost its soul with new stadiums and new money should watch the video.
