My wee boy is only a few days old, but I'm already thinking of the christening, and I've absolute know idea what he should be wearing or where to get it!

Any advice, photos, links would be great.

Is there any existing gown in the family that he could wear?

I had a christening gown made from my wedding dress, was worn by my son and daughter.

They really only wore gown in church and I had a fine knit top and pants that they wore then. Some people let kids wear gown all day. Up to you really.

I've seen divine cotton/lace gowns in blarney woolen mills type shops.
    Debenhams can have lovely gowns.
Have also seen top and pants sailor type if you not into gown. Kids boutiques can have outfits too.

I'll do a google later and edit in results

Congrats on your new little man too :)

Traditionally they wear the christening gown.

But they (girls or boys) can wear what you want.

Yup, white christening gown. Followed by babygrow or other outfit if you like.

I'm nervous as heck about the christening gown. Over 100 year old silk, it's as fragile as a butterfly wing. Baby will be in and out of it as quick as possible in case it gets damaged.

I didn't have a gown to inherit so bought a beautiful little silk romper off www.christeninggowns.com
Brilliant customer service. Shipped from west coast of US and arrived within 36 hours of ordering.
People were admiring the outfit all day and it was beautifully cool in last summers heat.

You should look at baby elegance's range. It is sold nationwide in baby shops or if you are in dublin they have a store in blanchardstown and Dundrum, they are very reasonable. I got their christening gown, it is stunning but my second choice was their romper. http://babyzone.ie/index.php?route=product/search&keyword=Christening&category_id=0
I also got a matching shawl but it is very hard to get now as they haven't remade it for this season. You can buy nice christening shawls in heatons though

Some people are just going down a beige/cream suit with a white shirt and a shawl

Littlewoods have this cutie romper and it is the cheapest romper I have seen http://www.littlewoodsireland.ie/ladybird-baby-boys-christening-linen-romper/1373259288.prd
Also if you like the shiny look guineys have some options http://guineys.ie/catalogsearch/result/?q=Christening&cats=

Depends on what age you're christening him at. My nephews have all been christened when they were a couple of months old and they wore the gown thing and then a kinda 'fancy' white babygro underneath it. My little cousin wore a romper suit thing which was adorable. My little guy was christened at about 7 months, so he wore a really cute linen suit. It was beige/cream with slacks and a waistcoat, then there was a blue and white striped shirt for underneath. I got him little 'deck' type shoes to wear with it, just for cuteness sake. He wasn't walking or anything at that age so he would have been grand in socks or bootees too.

A lot of people have a gown being used down along the family, but if not you could buy your own and even use for more kids.
If not there are lovely little outfits that you could get next, debanhams all have lovely stuff.

I made the mistake with no 1 (a girl) of getting a nice fancy frilly gown. Cost €60 and was only on her a few hours. Just had no 2 (a boy) christened sunday. Couldn't use the gown as it was way too girly. Was looking around at all the little romper type suits but SIL offered to loan us her boys one. I was delighted and it was a perfect fit.

So if you can get a loan of one do. (wish I did first time) but if you have to buy. Maybe get something that is unisex (if you plan on having more). When I was getting him christened sunday there were boys in gowns .
