How's the stability? Worth partitioning a drive to try it out on?

It seems okay. But I have it on a second partition on a second Mac. :D

Any thoughts on the new Photos app? It seems to spell the end for iPhoto. I can’t see Apple maintaining 3 separate photo applications on 2 platforms. I’m guessing a future release of Aperture will make it more user-friendly thereby eliminating the need for iPhoto. Seems like that’s where they are probably headed with iMovie as well, and - who knows - maybe iTunes one day as well.

Yeah, having three photos apps does seem like overkill. I imagine the features that iPhoto offers will gradually be baked into the OS photos app, whether it's on Mac or iOS. I suspect they'll keep Aperture as their pro software like Final Cut.

And you could be right on iMovie but I think there's more involvement with projects with imovie that you don't get with iPhoto, so there's a good incentive to keep it there.

Next year will definitely be the year of iTunes & music in general for Apple. Beats will have been bedded in, Apple devs will have the time due to not redesigning entire UI kits & paradigms, new programming languages.

I think next year might be the year that they start to break apart iTunes into more siloed apps - Music/Movie stores, a device manager app (if that's even necessary anymore) & itunes to purely play music .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,083 ✭✭✭FourFourRED

Yeah they are going to need to rival Spotify and either turn iTunes into something similar or keep Beats music seperate and launch a desktop version of that (which is less likely). I don't even use iTunes for music anymore, just for syncing my devices.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 638 ✭✭✭MillField

Has anyone used Beats music much? Didn't it just launch this year?

Well technically it's restricted to the US but yeah I've seen one of the lads on here saying they've used it and like it. I'm on the Spotify as it comes with my Vodafone price plan.

I use Spotify as well. It's very good in my experience. I see why Apple need to branch into music streaming..downloads are dying slowly. It will be interesting to see how Apple develop this as well as how the whole headphone aspect comes into things.

Fairly stable! Few crashes, one was pretty major with Mission Control crashing. Trackpad software needs refinining again. All is good though & using it on my daily machine

Sounds like Apple pulled loads of engineers off iOS 8 to work on Yosemite, because iOS 8 is really bad for stability.

Nope i'm finding both to be about equal. The only thing unstable are the apps & thats down to developers not using new SDK's yet,

Apple aren't accepting submission of Apps using the new SDK's yet. Probably won't be until almost launch date.

Yep, but I was just countering the fact that he said stability in iOS 8 wasnt great. It is great, its just that the apps arent built for it yet.

According to 9to5Mac, Apple originally planned to have Control Centre from iOS in Yosemite, but it got pulled:

The picture of control centre was later confirmed as a fake I'm sure?

I have installed the developers version on my old iMac - when I say old, it is from 2008 but it was running rather slow on Mavericks, however with this developers version of Yosemite, it is flying. The OS seems to be the lightest ever. I just hope the retail version is as light as the developers one...

Have you found the same? I was delighted when I realised it ran so quickly and smoothly. But I think you have to do a clean install, not over your current OS version, otherwise it will still be slow, from my experience.

Just watched the keynote. Am really happy with how it looks.

Did anyone else pronounce Yosemite as Yows-might before actually hearing it...or is it just me? lol

It's a hard one to pronounce alright haha. I would have thought it was "yo-se-might".

This has been known since the keynote. Handoff (picking up where you left off on another device) is proximity based and requires Bluetooth LE. Continuity (making and receiving calls) only requires Wi-Fi.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,206 ✭✭✭Zcott

It'll be interesting to see if it can be enabled using a Bluetooth LE dongle. They do exist, and some users have made them work with the Mac but that was before Yosemite.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,083 ✭✭✭FourFourRED

Luckily the handoff features don't appeal to me too much. Can't see a direct need for it at present. Definitely makes me consider upgrading to the newest rMBP now but I may as well hold out for broad we'll at this stage.

Looks like new iMacs are coming today. Non retina again though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,206 ✭✭✭Zcott

Worth also pointing out that Handoff will work between iPhone and iPad as they're both Bluetooth LE.

Bit off-topicish, but I'm hearing that Broadwell may not make it to market this year. Think I'll nab a Mac now at the start of the back to school season.

Intel are still promising Broadwell for Christmas. Quantities may be low, but I’d imagine Apple will get them first. So I think October is a safe enough bet.

My six year old MacBook Pro is running well but I would really like a 27" retina iMac...

Only thing about that is, unless the new rMBPs are going fanless and less powerful, we're likely going to be waiting until late Q1 or Q2 before they are updated. The quad-core broadwell chips are not due until Q1/Q2 2015. Only the Core M fanless designs will see the light of day before Christmas :(

I'm itching to upgrade my old 2010 MBP (which is no longer fit for purpose for me) but the wait is killing me, and I can't justify dropping €3k on year old chips.

Apple are one of the only highly profitable computer manufacturers today. Intel will bend over backwards to keep Apples business. Constant rumours of Apple developing their own chip will have intel worried.

Out of curiously can you run Mavericks on you MacBook?

Yep, and it runs well. I did a fresh install on an SSD and I've bumped up the RAM to the maximum of 4gb. It's the late 08 unibody, the first of the unibody designs.

Do you find the SSD makes a big difference? Currently looking at doubling my ram from 4 to 8gb as my macbook is running pretty slow at the moment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,206 ✭✭✭Zcott

Yep, I noticed a difference. Still the odd beachball on big apps but mostly runs pretty well. My machine only supports 3Gb/s which is a bit slower than new SSDs so I picked up a 120gb drive for £70 delivered iirc.

A word of warning for anyone installing or running the DP: Don’t upgrade to iCloud Drive. Doing so will prevent apps in iOS 7 and Mavericks from syncing documents and data. There’s currently no way to downgrade, but I assume Apple will have to find a solution to this before releasing the public beta. Thankfully I only had a few apps using iCloud Documents and was able to switch to Dropbox easily enough. Dropbox is probably more reliable anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,287 ✭✭✭kevteljeur

For what it's worth, I also saw some warnings about deleting of iCloud data for beta users, which happened on July 7th (and will likely happen again as new releases happen). It's worth bearing in mind that Apple considers data used by new features in beta software to be expendable. After all, if the data mattered, you wouldn't be using it with beta software...

Amen to that Kev, please anyone bear in mind what this upstanding gent is saying. If you call Apple about this, all they will do is refer you to the developer website and remind you of the T&C to which you agreed when you installed the beta!

I totally agree. However, I think you misunderstood my post. The wiping of CloudKit data that occured on Monday isn’t the issue, nor did I experience any data loss as a result. Such server wipes are normal during beta testing of new cloud services and shouldn’t result in data loss as iCloud will simply re-sync with your device’s local storage afterwards.

The issue I experienced is that DP3 upgrades your iCloud account to support iCloud Drive and in doing so completely disables the Documents & Data service. That doesn’t mean data loss, it means loss of iCloud’s document syncing service, meaning apps like Byword and even Apple’s own iWork apps can no longer sync documents using iCloud.

In fairness, upgrading to iCloud Drive is an option during the installation, but I don’t think Apple made the full implications of doing so clear. It’s not a huge issue for me as I don’t use Documents & Data for many apps and I can live without document syncing until the next server wipe, which I assume will reset everyone’s iCloud account. I was just warning anyone running the DP to be aware of this when installing.

Sorry, that was intended as a helpful addendum, because some users might not be as aware of the fickle nature of developer releases. Apple routinely clears server data during beta release cycles, but they and developers tend to take that for granted, while that would be a bit of a shock for the casual user.

I have no doubt that you know what you're about!

    Kevin

Edit: I just reread my original post and realised that it did come off a bit 'holier than thou'; The remark about using beta software I intended as Apple's attitude towards their beta releases!

I do think it's a fine line, which is why they didn't use to do this. However, their 10.x.0 releases have been buggy in real-world use, and since they are now free, I guess this is the trade-off.

Been using it since Dp1. Easily the most stable over the last few years.
