Dual NIC Cards in PC

    Hi folks,

I recently replaced a pc for a company who have a small internal network.

The old pc had 2 nic cards in it. A pci one and the integrated one.

One card was used to connect to the .local domain, server and network printers.

The other had an internet connection directly back to the Eircom modem.

This machine was the only machine in the office with internet access and was used for email mainly.

I set up the new machine with 2 nic cards as well and they connect ok to their respective networks.

BTW running 7 Pro 64 bit.

    Here's the issue.

With both networks connected, I cannot download anything from the net, just get a blank page.
I can send emails but not receive them.

If I remove the local connection to the nic it works fine.

Obviously there is a conflict or confusion somewhere.

I ran up the old machine and checked the network settings and both were set to automatically get settings.

The following are example settings I have.
    Local
    IP 192.168.0.15
    SM 255.255.255.0
    Gateway 192.168.0.1

    Eircom
    IP 192.168.1.10
    SM 255.255.255.0
    Gateway 192.168.1.254

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can you check if there's anything unusual in the routing table ?

    C:>route print

Also in most cases you wouldn't have a Gateway address for the internal network unless it needs a way out. It would cause a lot of confusion for the machine to have 2 gateways. Try deleting the entry for the NIC connected to the internal network.

    Thanks for the reply Ken.

I am there again tomorrow and I will print the route table here.

I did try to delete the gateway for the internal network but I got an error in network and sharing centre and when I used the trouble shooter the solution was to set everything to "automatically obtain".

Would an option be to punch in an IP and SMask manually (one from the IP range of course) leave the gateway blank and try that.

Are both addresses for the PC manual, or automatic?

Everything was set to automatic on the old pc.

Change the internal nic to static and remove the gateway. Best option is to use the old ip that was on the previous machine.

Im really curious as to what company would use that setup in this day and age.

The route table you posted, is that from the original XP machine ? The image shows Windows XP at the top of the command window ? Just trying to be clear on which config worked and which one didn't.

On the new machine on the 192.168.0 network you've used a different Gateway address to the original configuration, is there a machine on the local network with that specific address ?

Can you ping 192.168.0.5 for example ?

Just a guess here and I'll accept ridicule if deserved, if there was never a machine with 192.168.0.1 then there would be no MAC address in the ARP table then all packets to it would fail and the other Gateway would win each time ? If there is a real machine with that IP address on the network then there WILL be a MAC address in the local ARP table causing the issues you're experiencing.

    Be gentle :)

If a windows machine has two gateways and you want to talk to other subnets, windows will pick the first NIC unless specifically configured to pick another. While I understand the belief that it should try go out both and choose the one that works, it doesn't. Microsoft is very adamant on not using two gateways on Windows machines for that reason.

If he removes what I assume is the un-needed gateway, the machine will regain internet access.

    Thanks for the replies guys,

All config information shown above is from the old pc.

No information is shown for the new machine.

I had to actually plug the old pc back in the other day and I connected the two nics and this is the result.
    With this config everything works.
All settings on the old pc are automatic. Its a weird one alright.
I should add as well that the local network DHCP is handled by the server (running server2003).

What I find odd is that the address of the Default Gateways has changed from .1 to .5 - or is that just a typo ?

If the Windows 2003 DHCP server has been told to give a Gateway and DNS address then they shouldn't change. They would normally be fixed addresses.

On the old machine can you post the results of:

    C:>ipconfig /all

    - or just check to see if there is an alternative configuration configured on either of the adaptors. As you know it's possible to give a NIC multiple IP addresses, the above should allow you to see them.

On what is apparently the inside network, which in theory shouldn't make a difference. In theory.......

OP, simple test. Kill the gateway on the internet nic. If your not leaving the 192.168.1.* network it won't make a difference.
