Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

DIdn't realise that. Strange, always knew it as 4-2-3-1, does the no.10 operate a bit deeper than a standard no.10?

As far as I can tell it just varies from manager to manager and team to team. Even though a lot (or most) Dutch managers will describe it as a 433, some will have the number 10 doing a lot of tracking back, some will have a lazier 10. So some will use what you and I would imagine a 433 to be, others use what we'd call a 4231.

There is a number 10 in the formation that van Gaal calls his 433. He uses two hard working central midfielders, two wide men, a number 10 and a centre forward. I'd normally think of a 433 as having one deep lying defensive CM and two CMs who get up and down the pitch, but I've seen a few other Dutch coaches describe the 433 the same way LvG does. I think what those Dutch coaches are calling a 433 would usually be called a 4231 by other nationalities.

So there is a number 10 job there for Mata in van Gaal's system, if he wants to give it to him.

That's what I've been thinking , I've read that a number 10 is very important to Van Gaal systems.

Yeah he has said it's important and he sees/has used two types of #10's. The classical #10, used as third midfielder (he cites his use of Litamnen at Ajax) or the "second striker #10" (used Bergkamp with Netherlands), but he prefers the former.

How much each for the World Cup Sweeps? €20 to make things interesting?? (with an increase on things for which you can win)

Any of the free transfer players be worth a punt on even as squad players?

Ashley Cole. Would def take him as a backup to Shaw. Think of the experience he could bring for 1 or 2 years.

Ashley Cole is nowhere near as past his best as Evra is. Cole is still class.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,751 ✭✭✭newballsplease

I didnt actually realise Evra signed a 1 year extension. But from what i saw of A.Cole... He stilllooks like he can play at the Top for another couple of years. Evra is well past it to compare the two.

Certainly would. Would like Lalana as well if he was cheap (he won't be though).

Ward-Prouse always does well in FM as well :P

Of Southampton's midfielders and forwards Jack Cork is the one I'd have far ahead of all the rest.

Thought he was older. At any rate I wouldnt have him any more than a tidy midfielder.

Is it possible that Southampton trying to negotiate with Pochettino is what has held up the Shaw deal?

I think it's more likely they know if they wait 6 weeks, they might be able to squeeze another 5m out of him (after the WC).

There's a reason NO premier league team has managed to do much business yet...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,668 ✭✭✭Whatsisname

Could it be Ponchettino couldn't be assured that his star players wouldn't be sold this summer and decided to jump ship? Can definitely see Shaw, Lallana, Schneiderlin and Lovren leaving now.

Is it wrong that I wouldn't say no to any of those?

Obviously wouldn't happen but they're all quality, imo.

Is that reason that the Transfer window hasn't opened yet in England?

You would feel sorry for Southampton fans.
Having the spine of that club being ripped out now.

They may make money but who is to say they can get replacements if same quality. I hope they do for their sake or at least have a strong enough team to do ok next season.

Is that not a bit strange? I never put too much thought into it. I assumed that clubs are in negotiations prior to the opening of the transfer window but nothing can be official until after June 9?

June 9th? Window opens July 1st. Clubs can announce when they want (Barca have already paraded Ter Stegen), but the transfer doesn't become official unitl July 1st.

WC only 2weeks away now. If things ain't done by weekend I say twill be after WC unless player is not WC bound.

Being tidy with the ball is a fairly important part of a midfielder's job. And Cork's first touch and close control is better than anybody else in the team.

His defensive positioning and discipline are very good. Good at tackling. Excellent close control and good passing. He's the one who makes their midfield tick.

No major problem if certain WC bound players are happy with a proposal and it's just dotting the i's crossing the t's. Sure wont be available to the club until after WC anyway

Worry is if nothing starts gaining momentum

Pochettino going means a fire sale is on the way, I think he said he would stay if they didn't sell his players

Shaw is going and I wouldn't be too surprised if Liverpool got Lovren, Clyne and Lallana

I think Shaw signing would have eased few fans heart rate for a month anyway with WC on. Just hope we are in a positive position to sign who we want etc and not in limbo like last season.

Anyone know why Jimmy Lumsden was never on the bench for United? I don't think I ever saw him on the bench during Moyes's tenure.

I'll get the stats for you later but here is a cheap barometer. Cork linked to Fulham last season, Shneiderlin linked to quality clubs.

So you are telling me, Utd are given the chance of signing one of Cork or Schneiderlin and you choose Cork?!
