    Heya,
Can someone please add me as it seems beyond me this week.
    Current PB: 1:49:53
    Bib: 134
    Target: Hmmn 1.45

Calves haven't snapped yet from the torture but foam rolling is even more unpleasant than usual.
Did 15 LSR on Sunday after resting from Wednesday, took two gels and tried nuun tablet and new water bottle for the first time. Water bottle was 600ml and nearly pulled the arm off me. Much heavier than what I was used to. First caffeine high5 gel was ok and took it very early, about 3.5 m. Second one stomach cramped, high5 berry burst or something and walked. Garmin gave up at mile 13.4 and so walked a bit until it kicked back in, turns out it was still working so if you look at run review it looks like I fell off a cliff for mile 14. Pace was a bit too fast.
    Rest last night, run tonight.

    Hi frash
would you normally not run at all for three whole days prior to a race? Seems like a long time!

That's what I did for the Clontarf Half and I seemed to be well rested.
Plus I've got a bit of a niggle in my foot so I think that could do with a rest.

Edit - you have me doubting myself now! Maybe I should go out for 3 or 4 miles tomorrow?

Whatever works for you! Good idea to let the foot rest anyways. If all was feeling good by Thursday or Friday you could have a little test run. Hope it's perfect for Saturday.
Personally I'd always go for a short recovery paced run the day before a race to ensure everything feels good before race day.
    Best of luck!

Let the hope build again only to be shattered by my over hopefulness!! However 1:55 i think is very achievable for me.. From a 2:01 last year with walking in places and really little training.

Although i had a bad week last week.. Missing my LSR and some mid week runs and a *cough* Hell & Back!!

Just in from 4 fast miles, was tough. Like race/pukey tough. Added 5 * 100 m strides so at least that is done.
Good runners cutting one heel too so not happy. Started on Sunday so tonight didn't help. Still pondering a new pair for next month.

Added myself to the mix, looking for a pb on Saturday. Only other half I've completed was in waterford almost 2 years ago, I think the course on Saturday and conditions will be much more challenging. I ran dublin, half Last year but bowed out after 9 miles.

It's been mentioned in the last couple of days already, but I'd advise everyone to try at very least to run an even pace or negative split. I had a strategy last year of going out hard and then trying to hang on. You could say I was too aggressive but it would be more accurate to say I was plain dumb.

Giving myself two days off as per the boards plan. Already raring to go for Saturday.

    Hi aquinn,
I'd be inclined to reverse that run on its head a bit at least from mile 13 to mile one and start off around 9:30/40 pace and pick it up a bit later in the run and you'd likely finish a lot stronger. Even pop in a few mp miles towards the end if feeling good.
well done on the 4 fast miles. Hope you're doing a good warm up and cool down!!! Defo get the runners now and start breaking them in!

You do have the option of a few recovery paced miles if you want;)

Good advice there for everyone for Saturday Chad.
Nothing worse than going off too fast at a pace you can't sustain and suffering for the last few miles with a death march up the last few hills. Listen to Chad people!!! Be a little conservative starting out. If following say a 2 hour pacer is a bit of a stretch for you, consider going out at your own 2:05 pace and and picking up the pace later in the race if feeling good. ....
Also, if it's warm and you don't do well in the heat, revise your target time down a little bit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,936 ✭✭✭annapr

    Ososlo wrote: »
Yep I think 2:05 should be achievable for you but I don't think it's a great idea to go out at a faster pace than you think you're capable of with the intention of holding on as long as possible and planning to slow when you can't hold on any longer. Imo you'd be better off going out a bit more conservatively and picking it up later in the race if feeling good.
It could make for a very unpleasant race if you shoot your load too early.

Ososlo, very sensible advice... I knew you would say that 😄. My chief pacer thinks 2:00 is doable but that's easy for him to say. I'll see how I feel on the morning, I would be delighted with anything better than 2:10. This race last year was my worst race ever, I never thought I would ever do that distance again, never mind do it every week in training!!!!

What's this about a warm up and cool down???
Get out, stretch, wait for Garmin. Once it kicks in run flat out until you get your fourth mile beep and stop and walk? Avg pace tonight, 7.57, was even slower it seems that my 10 mile pace which is worrying since it was hard.
Yes Sunday's mood was an odd one so just decided to go out and not slow pace and just see how I got on at a good feeling pace. Will start at your recommend pace next time.
Thanks as always. Going to do the runners but waiting for fresh legs which is hard with all this running lark.

Well Mr. annapr knows appapr better than Ososlo knows her. All I have to go on is your recent race times and the running background that I know about from here.

You'll smash 2:10 in the flutter of an eyelash. That much is for sure;)

Ok so the pace of your lsr is not the issue then I guess.
Are you well fuelled up prior to the run and well hydrated in the days leading up and in general? Do you feel healthy in general or could you be lacking in something?
Do you feel a mental struggle more than a physical one on the longer runs?
    Sorry for all the questions!
Don't force the extra miles on top of the half if it doesn't feel right.

    Hi Ososlo,

No problem with the questions, thanks for taking an interest, I used to do a threshold run the day before my LSR to run on tired legs, worked fine until I hit 15/16, I don't use gels etc during training so fuelling and hydration could be an issue.

Another weekend in work with an emergency so its looking doubtful for this year, very very disappointed not to be running especially as most of my mates are running and training is going perfectly for them. I am in the running shape of my life, missed the last three years of Dublin and was determined to give it a go before other life responsibilities get in the way, so a little annoyed i didn't mentally get stuck into the LSR, will keep them very high over the winter so I don't make the same mistake again.

Would love to get under 2 hours but found this race very hard last year so not feeling too confident. Any improvement is a bonus, but considering I did the frank duffy 10 mile in the exact same time this year as last year, I wont build my hopes up.

Ran 5 miles last night at an average pace of 9.28. Meant to run slower but just fell into this pace...maybe I can keep it up for a marathon!! 8 miles slow planned for tonight then rest until sat, bar some foam rolling.

Still undecided about weather to make sat a 20 miler as per the HH plan. Its 7 miles from chesterfield ave back to my house...I wonder will my legs (and lungs) have anything left after the race.

Casey you have a lovely family!

Ososlo - I got my new bottle holder from wiggle! Love the look of it! Cant wait to try it out. Also got a lovely top.
