As a public service broadcaster, their remit should be to Saorview HD not rip off sky

They have to pay RteNL extra to put HD channels on Saorview. They're probably getting s bung from Sky for exclusive HD access. Think about it. Events like the 6 nations were covered by legislation to stop whoever had the broadcast rights from encrypting them. They had to be free to air. The loophole allowing Sky to broadcast the likes of the 6 nations in HD but encrypted so long as its broadcast in Sh*t D on Saorview was a major oversight. You pay your license but get an inferior service unless you pay again.

TV3 is not getting paid anything from Sky for "exclusive HD access", in fact two of TV3's three channels (3e and Be 3) are only HD on Virgin Media at present. The other, TV3 itself, is HD on a number of platforms, but not Saorview.

And the Six Nations is not protected for live FTA. Only highlights.

IRFU have a good lobby/pr group.

In other news Brendan O'Connor may make the switch to TV3 as a replacement for Vincent Browne. No August show this year. TV3 are looking for a lighter show according to Phoenix according to broadsheet .

    Also removes competition from PKTonight.

It would mean that Brendan O'Connor will not be able to present Cutting Edge on RTE One anymore if he was moving to TV3.

RTE are saying the opposite though. They want him to remain presenting Cutting Edge for RTE Autumn season.

Well he's not worth fighting over if TV3 offer more than 150,000 let him go.

You'd wonder why newspapers make up stories, is it purely to allow TV3 have a news story.

    TV3 dropped MasterChef along ago.

3e HD now on Sky epg number 105 with 3e sd moved to epg number 288. Looks like Saorview left out in the cold again. No surprise there then.

The answer to that is, don't renew the licences when they come up for renewal. ITV is on Freesat in HD. Then maybe RTE would add RTE3 in HD.

They can't even manage to get RTÉ 2 right but that's for another thread

They do not need to deny TV3 a licence.

All they need to do is move RTE onto Mux 1 and move TV3, e3, BE3, and TG4 onto Mux 2. It cost €6m per mux to run, so Mux 2 would be divided between them, and so it would only cost the €1.5m for each channel and they could all go HD as there would be room for them all.

Mind you that would need BIA and Comreg to agree. Now that would be some trick.

RTE own both Muxes. The independent commercial broadcasters could set up their own DVB network, which would cost something like the €75 million it cost RTE to set their one up.

Virgin Media has done a deal with a GMX Media for 615 hours of Children's TV. It includes the series of Cloudy with A Chance of Meatballs, the deal covers broadcast rights for TV3.

Is this the first deal that covers TV3 and Virgin. Deal was made with Virgin Media UK.

First batch of new kids shows on 3Kids starting on the 28th August.

Although, from looking into the kids shows, seems like 5 out of 6 come from CAKE - http://www.cakeentertainment.com/Home
independent entertainment companies specializing in the production, distribution, development, financing and brand development of kids’ and family properties

Also, an odd mix in types of shows here. Some are from pre-school, then there's a jump into live action pre-teen programming, and then back to pre-school. Doesn't make much sense and only seems like the programmes were shoved in there. They could easily break it up into a type of Cbeebies (1-5yr) and CBBC (6y-12y) blocks, extend the 3Kids brand and get rid of the Ireland AM repeats they have on be3

    6 Aesop's Theatre (Target Audience: 4-7yr olds)
    6.3 Lah-Lah's Adventures (2-6yr olds)
    7 Dead Gorgeous (8-12yr olds)
7.3 Shimmer And Shine (3-5yr olds)
    8 Angry Birds (4-12yr olds)
8.3 The Sparticle Mystery (6-11ys olds)

The only programme I know from that above selection is Angry Birds. I see it on the Kix Channel from the UK.

But the rest of them really are not familiar with me at all. Probably familiar with all the small kids though.

they sound like the kind of programmes you will find on Kix and other FTA children's channels coming from England.

Just seen the first press release they've added to their website in about 18 months, regarding the appointment of Gavan Reilly to Political Correspondent.

There's a quote from Mick McCaffrey (Head of 3News) with the following:
These are exciting times for our talented news team, especially as we welcome Gavan and prepare to unveil our newly upgraded News Hub on September 4th

The news set looks set for another rebrand so.

Very strange that they intro a new one (though not great), I wonder if the "new" will just consist of new graphics for TV3 main news at 5:30, taking be3.

To be fair it wasn't really a rebrand. Although they got a new set, everything graphics wise was exactly the same.

Hopefully though it will mean the end of Be3 News' seperate identity (the maintenance of which is bizzare).

Incidentally I understand TV3's Autumn launch is on 30th August.

Ok, scrap that schedule, new one up on Digiguide again, some sound a lot more familiar:
6:00 The Adventures Of Paddington Bear
    6:30 Fireman Sam
    7:00 In The Night Garden
    7:30 Frannies Feet
    8:00 Shimmer And Shine
8:30 Blaze And The Monster Machines

Apart from Shimmer And Shine, all the other are distributed by DHX Media. Judging by their wiki page, they have a lot of programmes there.

Very true Sam, it makes sense and its not the first time you mention this, but there is no one listening. Saorview is a bit of a joke in this regard, here again we have 3e hd launch on Sky and maybe be3 down the road. We saorview viewers don't enjoy looking at test cards going on for years.

I know no-one is listening. It might be a coincidence but Sky do sponsorship of RTE programmes.

Nor only that but RTE are not popular with the politicos. That may also be a coincidence. I do not think Saorview is a joke, but I think it is a joke that no attempt is made to get Sky to pay for retransmission rights for RTE programmes, nor any attempt by any agency to point out that the majority of TV watched is available FTA on Freeview spillover or from satellite.

Having the 2 present for two of the shows will be odd to say the least. Maybe one will chair a debate with few people, and the other can zone in on a single interview with a guest.

I don't get this love of Yeats. I could handle Browne lack of presenting skills but Yeats just seem to be talking to himself. There are other better former politicians that could do this job even former female politicians.
