VMTV TWO airing Europa league this Thursday

Red Rock taking a break for WWTBAM, it may do the same for ITG.

Looks like it's only tonight, as it's scheduled for Monday 11th & 18th

It's quite ridiculous how Virgin Media Ones schedule is completely dictated by how ITV schedules their programmes. Coronation Street is on Thursday this week, which means News @ 8 is on at 7.30pm.

WWTBAM being stripped across the week means Red Rock faces another break of a week - only 4 weeks after it returned. Unsure why they haven't places Red Rock at 10pm instead, or place Millionaire on VM2 and have some consistency on VM1. Same will happen with BGT live shows, where the News @ 8 will be dropped for the whole week. You'd never see RTE1 drop the 9pm news no matter what. That's how you build up your audience, when they can trust that when they turn on the channel at that particular time - then that programme like the 9 news will always be there.

Rte will trounce them in the ratings. One product in hd and the other in sd.

If you are buying sports rights you really need hd.

The tg4 picture is looking very poor especially with tvs getting bigger. It is hard to watch a hurling match on it.

They have done for the last few weeks.

The way the games are going at the moment, we could see a better rating for the Virgin Media One match.

I was surprised at that statement too, but we don’t talk about what’s actually happening on the pitch here.

Anyway, another Tuesday night match next week on VM One as well as RTE2.

It also forgets those not interested in sport or soccer, really just splits an audience of about 400,000 (at most) and 150,000 (at least).

Endeavour, which has been in the Tuesday 8pm slot for the past 3 weeks, I believe hasn't been in the Top 20 yet (meaning a rating of below 90k), so a rating of 150k for over 3 hours would still be decent for them.

Still they could get at least 350,000 if they had shown Man Utd live FTA tonight.

Virgin might only gain slightly. Audience has to be split 50:50, the RTÉ2 match has to the lesser of the 2 (they have first pick).

Wednesday night works better, while it means moving the soaps to TWO they keep there audience much better, meaning 350,000 for one and 250,000 for TWO and a possible increase for the soaps repeat later on TWO.

This is purely about trying to entice people to SPORT.

Absolutely - they want to preserve Virgin Media Sport as “the exclusive home of Champions League on Wednesday nights” - make sure that fans can’t watch both halves of any particular knockout tie free to air.

Until I saw they were showing another tie next week, I thought last nights game was a purely opportunistic move by VM for ratings given RTE had selected a match which was all but a dead rubber.

I'd like to know how many new subscribers Virgin Media have on the back of their Virgin Media Sport channel.

Looks like they’ve move people from analogue with a 400 increase since sport began.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,686 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

That’s a just over 0.1% increase, practically negligible, and who knows how many of them joined because of VM Sport. In truth if you’re happy on any other platform and want UEFA football you are nearly just as well taking BT Sport - if you’re a football fan you probably have it in any event.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,768 ✭✭✭lertsnim

Essentially the money they paid for the UEFA rights is money down the drain.

I see on their highlights show that Virgin Media customers can now give a friend the gift of free Virgin Media Sport online for a month.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,686 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

They would nearly be better off giving up on the pay TV aspect and just putting a Wednesday night game on VM One and trying to make the most of the rights by bringing in the advertising revenue. Clashing with RTE like this just splits the audience for free to air football. I guess we’ll probably have to wait till next season to see any change in that strategy though.

What they don’t seem to have realised is to run a pay TV product, you need exclusive rights. Not non-exclusive rights to sports that another more well established sports broadcaster also has.

Yet they still say that Virgin customers can exclusively see games.

Is Virgin Media Television just there of Virgin Media Product Placement?

They keep saying it, but it’s not true. Eir Sport even took them to task on it before the season started. It’s a relatively unusual arrangement for two pay TV companies to be awarded rights to the same games.

So guys, how much coverage do we think VMT is going to give to this week's Choice Music Prize? And can we expect an interview and live performance with the winner on Ireland AM?

    Steve

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,768 ✭✭✭lertsnim

Well if it was the Virgin MediaChoice Music Prize then I'd expect coverage like the Virgin Media Dublin film festival but as it's RTE they'll probably mention very little

RTÉ2 really giving it a prime time slot of 11:30 at night.

Flood, a former host of Off the Rails television series and several RTE shows, was to have presented a TV3 documentary series about older mothers but this was shelved after Virgin Media took over the station

From indo re mortgage repayments will post link later.

Fairly certain this was announced long after Virgin Media took over.

When you subscribe to VMS is it in HD?

Just wondering as watching anything on Virgin Media 1,2 or 3 SD is awful quality. It looks even sub SD. I've not watched any six nations on it as the games are on ITV and BBC in HD. Same goes for the champions league on BT HD. I'd turn over for the punditry, but that's about it.

Also, when TV3/Virgin obtained the rights for the Champions League did they do so on the basis that they would be putting it on behind a paywall?

It's hard to know. It was understood that they had first choice on Wednesday Night and the Final. First choice becomes pointless when you decide to air a second choice match FTA, and your first choice on PayTV. And since you do not have exclusive rights behind the paywall it becomes even more pointless.

It’s in HD on Virgin Media cable, if that’s what you mean. But so is Virgin Media One, Two, and Three.

No idea about if you take it via streaming only option.

UEFA don’t care anymore whether or not a rights holder broadcasts free to air or pay.

Either way, they sure weren’t broadcasting up to six simultaneous fixtures on three free to air channels.
