Some months ago, there was talk about from the Indo about TV3 doing major TV deals of having the rights of some US dramas as well as Dallas that will be shown on the channel probably in the near future.

They will surely include those dramas in the newly expanded new season schedule later on won't they.

Yep they didn't mention much about their movie and TV deals with Warner Bros etc... in their Autumn launch. Although that's a big difference compared to 15 or so years ago - when their Autumn launch would just delight in the fact they've secured new US TV series Judging Amy and the film premiere of The Cable Guy.

This year they'll have Dallas, Wentworth and Law And Order:SVU, but unknown as to what else really. They showed Crisis a few weeks ago - but was swiftly axed in the US.

You didn't read those threads, or even flick through them much.

Bulk of the content was along the lines of "what is this crap", for starters.

Does anybody watch Dallas ? it hasn't really set the country on fire since it relaunched

US TV Shows are really hard to get any kind of decent ratings for now. I remember when Desperate Housewives used to get around 400,000 ratings for RTE2 - at a time when torrents and streaming weren't as available as they are now.

Of course, the only way to beat this is to show the episodes the day after the US. It can be slightly messy though, especially as some US shows take breaks for bank holidays and Christmas. It's ok for some shows like Homeland as they show the 13 episodes in one go.

Just looking back to the latter series' of Lost and Prison Break on RTE2 - and I wouldn't know if it was going to be on this Thursday, or next Thursday, or is there a double bill on this week. It was a mess.

Going back to the question, I don't think Dallas had the same huge effect either here or in the US as the 80s version (to be expected), but they would still gain modest ratings, similar to what Greys Anatomy/Revenge would get on RTE2.

I think RTÉ used broadcast that Desperate Housewives thing within a few days of the US ... that is a massive help in stopping people download the show.

Is it true that Home and aways ratings on RTE have collapsed the last couple of years ?

Not surprising. Are they still monthys behind Australian tv? That's not going to work if every episode is streamed online as it airs in Australia.

Do you think TV3 are scouring the globe looking for TV programmes that are:

    1. Worth broadcasting and, more importantly, worth watching.

    2. Culturally suitable for broadcast here.

    3. High production values.

    4. Interesting for an Irish audience.

    5. High entertainment values.

    6. Cheap.

I would think the last item is probably all they look for in actual fact.

Ha this is TV3 we are talking about ... Their main objective is coming up with new ways to blame RTÉ for everything bad that ever happened in the world anywhere...

Home and away ratings may have, I watch home and away on channel 5 +24 on a Sunday and get to see the the weeks episode that are going to be on rte. I do have it on series link on rte, if that adds to the ratings?. I would agree that for big American programs a channel needs to have them a few days after they are shown. I think if tv3 looked there is a lot of good programs from America that are not shown over here that they could show.

I am going to try to avoid TV3's past in this post .... and I'm back :)

Life has its own twitter account https://twitter.com/TV3Life and its a live daily programming, though no information on the time it will go out. While Xposé starts its hour long edition next week.

I don't think that anyone wants to see job losses in any company around the country so my criticism is not aimed at TV3 staff or at losing TV3. IMO it is important that it stays. However.....

The communicorp announcement seems a bit premature, though it will possibly happen. The announcement of new services also seemed very premature especially since they didn't seem to make the TV3 launch last week.

Again I don't see the sticking power of live TV magazine programmmes, it will be interesting to see how Life does but I really think this is a miss fire by TV3.

TV3 will have to air Downton Abbey on TV3 and move Xtra Factor to 3e, it make no sense not to simulcast Downton Abbey on TV3. They will lose an audience to UTV by not doing so.

Their slate of programmes aren't bad but they aren't wonderful either, there are few long running serials announced TV3 Docs Dept, Red Rock, The Lie and Paul Kelly's Master Class are the only 3 long running series with 40 episodes announced. Not that TV3 should have huge numbers of the same programme constantly but after those shows all other shows get from 3 to 10 episodes. Though I must admit I am only going on the programmes announced, prehaps there are other programmes not mentioned ready and waiting.

They will have to work to get Sports people on side for RWC, anyone I know who I have told TV3 have the rights have been fairly disappointed by the news.

This isn't to slate TV3 but they really don't seem to have though about programming. The highlight is Red Rock and as I said before its out on its own, no mention of other drama's either Irish or Foreign helping to support the new Soap.

2014 has been very bad for TV3, it is dissappointing that they left changing their schedules so late. Daytime ITV programming (including repeats) should be moved to 3e, with new programming replacing it on TV3, that move won't break the bank and would prove that TV3 had something to play with when those shows go to UTV Ireland.

Should also mention that TV3 had 495,000 viewers for X-Factor on its opening weekend. Up from 2013.

In saying that UTV Ireland shouldn't be overly praised either.

Also in relation to ratings for US programmes, Irish viewers will tune into a strong show as long as the broadcaster can get the programme close to the date of the US airdate. RTÉ have made a huge mistake not getting The Good Wife closer to its original air date instead opting for other Grey's Anatomy/Desperate Housewives type programmes.

I think Dallas is about to be axed????

In fairness to tv3, they do a better job of daytime tv than RTE One. Today is September 1st and there is no sign of RTE 1's two live daytime shows, Morning Edition and Today

They should be getting very little for what their schedule will be imo.

Just saw this thread... tv3 have absolutely nothing i would look forward to watching as a 25 year old male... terrible channel, that and tg4 i never watch. "Ireland's most successful commercial channel"... in what universe are they living? the only thing they have/ or had is european soccer but i just watch itv or sky now, i couldn't bear the pundits. Them and setenta have the worst pundits... if i see Brian Kerr on a panel now i just switch it off until the match starts.. if he commentates i just won't watch the match at all.

I tried watching the 2 tv3 documentaries last night but I have to say they were not great. They looked like they were made on a shoestring and the guinness one was a glorified advert for guinness disguised as a documentary that was made over a year ago by the looks of it.
If they are to retain their audience with these home made efforts(and fair enough for trying) then they will have to signficantly improve the quality of them and at least make them watchable without people turning off.

I think the Guinness one was a re-badged 'Discovery Channel' show from a few years ago - the slapped a narration over it and passed it off as an original production

It's a good thing I didn't watch that documentary than.

Let's hope that TV3 for this year alone will not even consider rehashing other programmes while passing it off as theirs.

I'm sure that has been incorrectly stated from the indo. UTVi was saying that they'll have Graham Norton in their press release.

I think they both will have it for 2015 - whether tv3 will have first run rights with utv or just repeats is not known.

Yeah was thinking the same, I just think the word exclusively shouldn't have been used.

With Graham Norton in 2015, we could have a scenario showing the same episode:

    22:35 Fri BBC1
    21:00 Sat 3e
    22:00 Sat UTVi
    23:00 Sat TV3

I'd say UTV Ireland will go to have it simulcast with a repeat during the week. For both Graham Norton and Jonathan Ross.

yes the 10pm news finishes on fridays at 10.40 on UTVNI, so if they want to they can just finish the new Irish 10pm news at 10.40 on a friday and go straight onto Graham Norton silumcast with BBC1.

no simulcast as BBCtv has the first run rights and UTV/tv3 will show it on saturdays with ads
